Dancing Hermione is back – and this time she’s advocating for transgender rights.
Kelsey Ellison is no stranger to going viral. Her Dancing Hermione character is known worldwide for her amazing dance moves and incredible death drops.
For those who need a refresher, Dancing Hermione first became an internet sensation (and meme) back in 2018, after a video was shared of Kelsey dancing in Hermione cosplay to the Mario theme tune while attending MCM Comic Con. For obvious reasons, the clip went viral, and was quickly followed up by a sequel, which we had on repeat for what seems like FOREVER.
Well, two years later, she’s back, and this time she’s standing up for the ‘T’ in LGBTQ+: transgender rights.
Over the weekend, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling shared a now deleted tweet, wherein she stated her belief that only women can menstruate and experience periods. These blatantly incorrect and incredibly hurtful comments incited a lot of backlash, with many clapping back at Rowling.
I’ve had enough @jk_rowling !!! Happy pride month everyone 🏳️🌈 #lgbTq pic.twitter.com/cMeNV0LSSn

One recurring comment was about Rowling’s character, Hermione Granger, who is seen throughout the series as an advocate for minorities and those who face discrimination – for example, House Elves rights. As such, many were quick to point out that Hermione would not stand for Rowling’s anti-trans comments.
Enter Kelsey.
In response to the controversy, Kelsey shared a new Dancing Hermione video with her Twitter followers, showing herself dressed as Hermione dancing in front of the trans flag. The video had initially been uploaded to Instagram on 29 May in support of the release of Lady Gaga’s new album, Chromatica. However, given Rowling’s tweet, Kelsey felt it important to re-share the video on Twitter (it had been removed in May due to music copyright) as a way to callout the author for her close-minded views.
Not only were her moves on fire, but it was a genius showing of solidarity with those within the trans community. This is totally something we can see Hermione doing, if she were a real person.
Obviously, the video was met with much praise:
Hermione says human rights 💙💖🤍💖💙
