Since the whole world is moving to Zoom meetings…
Nobody has been spared from the reality of communicating with friends, family and our peers via video calls in 2020. So it got us thinking, what would a Zoom call full of YouTubers look like? Would it be complete chaos or would it be a civilised affair discussing the watch-time algorithm and latest trends online? Well, wonder no more as we’ve put together a play-by-play of exactly how we think it’d go. You can thank us later, honestly.
Zoe Sugg
Dialling in on her iPhone, Zoe Sugg is all smiles. In true Zoella style, we can spot a lit candle in the background, although we can’t tell if it’s from the Zoella Lifestyle range. We’re guessing notes of fresh roses, jasmine and luscious geraniums dancing in the warm air of her conservatory. Just a guess.
Zoe has found the built-in ‘beautify’ filter in Zoom, although everyone says she doesn’t need it. The connection on her iPhone isn’t great but we think we spied a few pixels that vaguely resembled a dog scurrying around in the background. So that’s a bonus.
Vikkstar
It’s no surprise that Vik comes to us from the comfort of his gaming chair. As usual, he’s listening politely and only speaks when spoken to. There’s a perfect made bed in the background of the call and honestly, we’d expect nothing less from him.
At one point in the call Vik apologises for the random noises that can be heard coming from the other rooms in the background, there’s shouting and banging which we’re guessing means someone else is filming a video. Or perhaps his girlfriend is getting a little bit too enthusiastic on his Oculus VR kit.
Daniel J Layton
For some reason Daniel J Layton has dialled in from the late noughties. Perhaps it’s a sign of things to come if self-isolation continues for much longer.
Balancing his laptop on a pile of miscellaneous books, Daniel is being his chirpy self. At one point he takes us to sit in his kitchen where someone on the call makes a Baking with Layton joke – very original. We think we heard his phone go off at one point and we have to say, the Janet Jackson ringtone is on point.
Joe Sugg
Sitting relaxed at home, Joe Sugg is joined by a wild sprig of luminous hair that we can only assume is attached to Dianne Buswell.
The pair have taken a rare break from making TikToks and at one point in the call Joe changes his virtual background to a series of images, each more random than the last. A galaxy, the Strictly Come Dancing set, the view at the top of a ladder on a thatched roof. It’s all very exciting for the Zoom call.
Pewdiepie
Felix Kjellberg joins the call a few minutes late and wears his hoodie up with his headphones over the top for the duration of the call, so we’re not exactly sure how much of the call he heard but he looks happy enough just to be included.
He looks pretty comfortable dressed cosy on the top but we know there’s at least a 50% chance it’s all au naturale on the bottom half. We’ve all done it. There’s no shame here. Good on you, Pewdz.
TenEighty HQ
Yes, we’re on the call too. Surprise. Dialling in all the way from TenEighty HQ (editors note: we don’t have an office), we patiently wait for our turn to speak and try our best to keep up with all the SRS BSNS going on.
At one point we have to excuse ourselves as we’re double booked on a Skype interview with Tyler Oakley about his new fitness series. It’s not easy being the BBC of YouTuber news, you know. But we make it work. Or should that be werk.
Taz Alam
It’s never explained why, but Taz joins the call sitting on the floor even though we can see at least three more comfortable seating options in the background throughout the call.
When she’s not intently taking notes on the call, Taz is digging in to some food which she tells everyone she acquired for free. We expected nothing less of her, let’s be honest. She’s so on-brand and pulling it off effortlessly. We love to see it.
Joe Tasker
In a move he quickly comes to regret, Joe Tasker has somehow managed to turn himself into a potato and can’t figure out how to turn the filter off.
After a few minutes of being coached on how to turn it off by Felix, Joe gives up and quickly begins to adjust to his new life as a Zoom potato. He considers his future, potential potato children and nobody hears from him again on the call. Fly high, potato Joe.
ImAllexx
In a strange twist that has him thinking he might have dialled in to the wrong call, Alex quickly settles into the call and makes some valid points during the YouTubers discussion.
He goes quiet after that for a good 20 minutes, when it’s revealed that we’ve actually been watching a looping video of Alex pretending to listen intently to the conversation. In reality, he’s actually been off taking pictures for his OnlyFans. Oh.
Luke Cutforth
Another call participant that seems to have dialled in from the golden era of YouTube, Luke Cutforth and his aesthetic are really taking us to places we thought we’d forgotten.
He’s fairly quiet on the call, sitting silently and looking off into the distance until just before the end of the call when he comes out with something so oddly profound that everyone is left with more questions than answers. But in a good way. In a Luke way. Never change, Luke.
Caspar
Unsurprisingly to basically everyone who knows him, Caspar seems to have lost his shirt and is wandering around his house during the call but doesn’t seem to be going anywhere in particular. Nevertheless, he looks like he’s having fun.
Quite early on in the call, nature calls and Caspar announces he is making a trip to the boys room. It’s at that point he forgets to turn his camera off and the ensuing scene is… well… disturbing. We knew it would happen to someone. But poor Caspar. Luckily he seems completely unphased and continues as if nothing as ever happened.
Susan Wojcicki
Thankfully YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki joins shortly after Caspar’s toilet incident and brings order to the proceedings. It turns out Susan is pretty down to Earth and knows all about the latest trends online. Rumour has it she’s got the Renegade dance down to an art – but she refuses to demonstrate it live on the Zoom call.
In a time when many company CEOs feel untouchable and godly, Susan brings a surprising touch of humanity to the chat and talks openly about the successes and failings of YouTube so far. We stan.
