Congrats on 100 episodes!
Do you remember what was happening in 2016? Let us remind you: Jamala was the winner of Eurovision, the summer Olympics were held in Rio de Janeiro, dodie released her Intertwined EP and the Fine Brothers tried to trademark Reaction videos. (Remember that drama?) Oh, and the iconic true crime series that is Buzzfeed Unsolved debuted on YouTube.
What started with the case of Australia’s Somerton Man has come to include a whole host of true crime and supernatural phenomena. For over four years, Ryan Bergara and Shane Madej have put on their detective hats and worked to try and solve some of the world’s most renowned unsolved mysteries. While they’ve been largely unsuccessful in actually solving these cases (we’ll give them an A for effort), they have been successful in keeping us entertained time and time again, and with the airing of the series’ 100th episode, we felt it time we shared with you all just a handful of our favourite videos.
Here they are, Shaniacs and Boogaras, our Five of the Best: Buzzfeed Unsolved episodes!
The Demonic Goatman’s Bridge
Fans of the supernatural will be familiar with the tale of the Goatman who claims ownership of the old Alton Bridge that sits between Denton and Alton, Texas. The Goatman is said to be a demonic entity who has glowing eyes and goat horns. Many stories surround how he came to roam the earth, with rumours ranging from involvement by those of the occult to him being the spirit of a goat farmer who was murdered by Klan members. No matter how he appeared, he’s said to terrorize the forest in which the bridge is situated, and Ryan and Shane decided to visit it in person to try and confirm his existence.
This video contains our favourite scene from the entire series of Buzzfeed Unsolved, which sees Shane try to antagonize the Goatman, much to Ryan’s dismay, “Goatman, I’m dancing on your bridge. It’s my bridge now. You hear that? If you want me off this bridge you’re going to have to kill me. You’re going to have to throw me off this bridge yourself. Look at the way I dance on it. I disrespect your bridge, Goatman.” No matter how many times we watch it, we can’t help but laugh!
The Creepy Quandary of Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm
Ryan and Shane have covered a few cases from right here across the pond and the latest one is the nearly 100-year mystery of who put Bella in the wych elm. This case is one the majority of us have heard of, but are you actually aware of the full details and all the twists and turns it takes?
Theories are abound with this one. While some believe Bella was a German spy who died whilst working an undercover mission in England, others say she was killed by someone under the noise of an air raid, this case is likely one that will never be solved, due to the amount of time that has passed. However, given how close to home it is, it’s one we’d very much like to see a resolution too. Hopefully one day we’ll learn just how exactly Bella came to be in the wych elm.
The Strange Disappearance of D.B. Cooper
From what we gather, this is one of the most infamous cases to have occurred in the United States and not one we can imagine happening now, but things were different in 1971. Dan Cooper – better known as D.B. Cooper – managed to pull of the heist to end all heists when he hijacked a flight, but did he get away with it or was he unable to stick the landing?
What interests us most about this case is that the FBI has never arrested anyone in connection to the crime. While there are numerous suspects, one more likely than the next, no one has ever been held accountable. We wonder: what happened to all the money? If he did indeed perish after jumping out of the plane, like some have theorised, why haven’t his body or parachute been located? Just like most of the cases covered on Buzzfeed Unsolved, there are many questions and very little answers. Perhaps that’s why they remain unsolved.
The Harrowing Hunt For Bigfoot
Are you someone who believes in Bigfoot? We ourselves would claim to be skeptics of the hairy legend, but that doesn’t mean we’re not fascinated by the lore behind its existence. In this episode of Buzzfeed Unsolved, Ryan and Shane travel to northern California to catch footage of Bigfoot and finally prove once and for all that it’s a living, breathing creature.
There have been many people over the years who claim to have seen Bigfoot in person. Some have collected hair samples, while others have made plaster casts of its footprints, but even still, scientists have not confirmed whether it’s more than a legendary being. While Ryan and Shane were not able to encounter one in the forest, we applaud their efforts, and we hope they try again in the future! Who knows, maybe they’ll get lucky the second time around.
The Haunted Halls Of Waverly Hills Hospital
We’ll admit, we’re pretty big skeptics when it comes to ghosts and the supernatural. We believe those who claim to have footage of ghost orbs floating around have actually just caught specks of dust floating in the night. However, our stance on the subject slightly wavered after watching Ryan and Shane visit Waverly Hills Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
While Shane may not believe what Ryan experienced at the sanatorium is real, we have cause to believe otherwise. What are the odds that the ball he threw for little Timmy would have not only bounced a couple of extra times, but also ended up in a room with the name “Ryan” written on the wall? We know coincidences exist, but come on! We might have to agree with those who call Waverly Hills one of the most haunted places in the world.
So there you have it…
Our Five of the Best: Buzzfeed Unsolved episodes! Given Ryan and Shane have made 100 videos in the series, it was incredibly difficult to pick just five, but we think we did the show justice. Here’s hoping we get 100 new episodes in the future – it’s definitely something we look forward to watching each Friday.
