Instagram has been focussing on its desktop-based features in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The update allows users to watch Instagram Live videos while on their desktops, with the option to send comments and emoji reactions during a stream.
Instagram Live will be accessible via the Stories section to the right of the home feed, and the videos will be labelled as such with the word “LIVE”.
Instead of having comments and emojis overlay on the videos like on mobile, the web version separates them, so they appear along the side.
While users will be able to stream live video via desktop, they still will not be able to publish their own content through the site, nor go live or add stories. These features are still mobile-centric.
The latest update closely follows the announcement that Instagram will now be allowing users to access their direct messages through the app’s desktop site.
