It’s the start of something new, it feels so right to be here with you. Ohhhh.
Okay, so it isn’t necessarily the START of anything NEW, but it is the RETURN of something GREAT. That great thing? The Five of the Best! And, this week, we are starting 2020 off on the right foot by focusing on one of our favorite things!
The staff here at TenEighty may or may not be known to belt out a show tune or two in the car or at karaoke, but we don’t claim to be able to sing like the Idina Menzel’s, Anthony Rapp’s, and Ben Platt’s of the world. While you guys would probably enjoy a laugh at our expense, we decided not to upload the videos of us singing horribly to YouTube and instead have gathered a handful of videos by much more talented individuals for you to enjoy. You can thank us for saving you from having your ears bleed later.
So, without further ado, here are our Five of the Best: Musical Theatre Covers!
One Jump Ahead – Aladdin | PetesJams
Peter Kingston is probably going to want to kill us for including this video in this article, but we HAD to.
Yes, you’re probably thinking that this is a little bit cringe, but we love every chaotic second of it. Peter may not be Adam Jacobs or Brad Kane, but we love him more than anything. We are obsessed with this video and the spin that Peter put on it.
Come on, how can you not love having five of Peter on the same screen?
SIX The Musical in 5 Minutes | Liana Flores
Divorced. Beheaded. Died. Divorced. Beheaded. Survived.
Listen up, let me tell you a story. A story that you think you’ve heard before– *record scratch* Wait. You guys didn’t come here to for this..
Unless you guys have been living under a rock, you have probably heard of the new West End and Broadway sensation that is SIX the Musical. A fair few of our staff here at TenEighty are obsessed with this musical, focusing on the wives of Henry VIII, so it felt almost blasphemous not to include this wonderful mashup of the SIX soundtrack from Liana Flores.
(Side note- if you guys haven’t seen this musical, please go see it. It will change your life)
Defying Gravity Cover | Carrie Hope Fletcher
If you thought Peter’s cover was a throwback, wait until you get a load of this one. Yes, we are throwing it back to a simpler time on YouTube, when Rebecca Black’s “Friday” was the most popular video on the platform and Summer in the City was still in a field.
In 2011, when Carrie Hope Fletcher first started uploading to YouTube, 13 out of the first 15 videos she uploaded were covers, each more impressive than the last. Because of this, it was so hard to pick which of the musical theatre covers Carrie has done over the years since they are all just SO GOOD! We could have chosen the cover of “On My Own” which foreshadowed her future, but how can we not chose her cover of “Defying Gravity?!” Can we start a petition for Carrie to be the next Elphaba, please? Thanks.
Favourite Things – Cover | dodie
If you guys are anything like us, you’re probably a sucker for a good uke cover, and who is better with the ukele than dodie.
The Sound of Music is such a classic and Dame Julie Andrews is such a star so we didn’t think that this song could get much better, but then dodie happened. This whimsical cover of “Favourite Things” almost makes us forget that the Nazi’s were trying to persecute the Von Trapps.
She Used to be Mine : Waitress Cover | Amy Lovatt
March 27, 2018 is a day that changed our lives. Why? Because the MCC Theater’s YouTube channel uploaded this video of Jeremy Jordan singing “She Used to be Mine” from WAITRESS.
Another day that changed our lives? November 28, 2018, the day that Amy Lovatt uploaded her cover of the same song. If you’re looking to curl in a bawl in cry because of someone else’s talent and because of the meaning behind a song, this is the video for you. We are sorry in advance for the feelings that WAITRESS brings in us that we have now just forced upon you.
So there you have it…
Our Five of the Best: Musical Theatre! We are definitely not going to judge you for the abundance of West End tickets you’re about to go buy because of this article, but we are going to judge you if you don’t take us with you to any shows.
