Lex Croucher spoke to TenEighty to share the inspiration behind her book You’re Crushing It and what the writing process was like for her.
Lex released her first book You’re Crushing It on 13 June. It is a survival guide for young people which covers topics such as family and friends, relationships, body confidence, social media and more.
In an announcement video for the book, Lex described it as “those inspirational Tumblr posts turned into real-life”, saying that she thought these types of posts were “rubbish” and she could give better advice, so the idea for the book was born.
The title You’re Crushing It was her first idea for the book title, with Lex explaining that she “couldn’t imagine it being called anything else” and wanted it to sound positive and powerful.
“There’s some kind of business self-help book called Crushing It though, so I hope nobody picks mine up expecting detailed advice about profit margins and spreadsheets,” she jokes.
When asked if she had any friends or family she turned to during the writing process when finding it difficult, Lex confessed that her boyfriend watched her “go a little bit off the deep end writing this book”.
She explained that at the time she was working full-time and had multiple different projects going on simultaneously, so there was a period of time where her boyfriend “had to do all the cooking, patting me on the head consolingly with one hand and stirring soup with the other while I wept from stress”.
Lex told TenEighty that her favourite inspirational Tumblr post is one which immediately comes up when you search “inspirational Tumblr post” online, which reads “Don’t forget to smile today”, saying that it “makes me want to punch my laptop”.
“Let’s just go with that one,” she adds. “Don’t forget to smile’. Jesus Christ.”
