Go green in 2019!
As thousands of British students took to the streets this month to raise awareness of climate change, topics like sustainable living and being environmentally friendly are set to become some of the defining subjects of the next few years. As such, videos about them have grown in popularity over the past few years, with some of our favourite creators teaching their viewers the importance of sustainability and reducing our impact on the environment.
Here they are, our Five of the Best: Let’s Become Environmentally Friendly!
Let’s Chat Sustainability | Chatty GRWM | Lucy Moon
There’s no one way to be environmentally friendly and ethically sustainable, and Lucy Moon addresses this perfectly in her video from late last year. While living in a truly sustainable way can be feel daunting in a world so consumed by things like fast fashion, animal testing and consumer excess, Lucy shows us how making small changes can be the first steps toward a more sustainable lifestyle.
Whether it’s being more conscious of your buying choices by adopting a capsule wardrobe, finding ways to reduce the presence of single use plastics in your life or even just starting your research into how to live more sustainability, Lucy gives so many great tips.
STOP MAKING HAUL VIDEOS | Lex Croucher
As a complement to Lucy’s video, Lex Croucher addresses the issues surrounding haul videos on YouTube. Admitting it as something she has indulged in in the past, Lex explains how haul videos play into the unsustainable fast fashion industry, perpetuating the production of cheap clothing from damaging materials using dangerous, underpaying labour practices.
In this, she touches on how difficult being environmentally friendly can be. Haul videos are a major part of YouTube culture in the same way many other unsustainable practices are a part of culture more broadly, but that doesn’t mean changing our practices for the better isn’t worth it.
10 EASY ECO-FRIENDLY, SUSTAINABLE SWAPS | Carmen Elaine
So you’ve learnt about what products and services are environmentally unfriendly, but how can you make a change for the better in your day-to-day life? Carmen Elaine has the perfect video for you! A minimalist and advocate for simplifying your life, Carmen covers the products you can use to lessen your impact on the world.
Whether it’s switching to an environmentally friendly energy provider, using fabric tote bags rather than plastic or buying secondhand, these are all quick and easy steps to take on your road to sustainability.
Ethical Fashion Brands | ARKET, Nobody’s Child, Not See & more | Samantha Maria
As touched on in some of the previous videos, the environmental impact of fast fashion is quickly becoming one of the main touch points of the sustainability debate. In this video, Samantha Maria shows us clothing brands that can help reduce our environmental impact.
With material from sustainable sources, fully accountable production lines and a focus on timeless designs that won’t be out of style in a few months, all of the brands Samantha showcases are designed with sustainability in mind, giving you another great way to start living in a more environmentally friendly manner.
Moving to Ireland – Cottage Restoration, Self-Sufficiency and Sustainable Living | Mossy Bottom
While the other videos on this list have had a focus on easy steps to take in your day-to-day life, Daniel of Mossy Bottom takes it a whole new level. Spending all of his life savings, he bought a crumbling cottage on a plot of land in Western Ireland and has been documenting the restoration process and his efforts to live wholly self-sustainably.
Although this drastic of a lifestyle change isn’t for everyone, it’s equal parts fascinating and relaxing to watch Daniel walk through his land, explaining how he grows his own food and how he moved to Ireland. Those looking to make positive changes to the world could certainly take some inspiration from Daniel’s adventures.
So there we have it…
