DIYouTube!
DIY isn’t all putting up shelves, gardening or building furniture, and it isn’t only done on sunny bank holiday Mondays. YouTubers do it to! From cooking and fashion to model building and, okay, maybe a bit of furniture building, loads of creators across YouTube have been showcasing their efforts.
Through YouTube videos, many creators have been sharing their passion and craft with the world, whether it be to teach, inspire creativity or just to show us what not to do. Let’s jump right into our Five of the Best: DIY Videos!
Baking With Layton (dodie birthday special 2k17) | Daniel J. Layton
“Like my uncle used to say, self raising flour, every hour.”
Victorian showtunes sung by the Fratocrats. The chaotic energy of Josh Edwards climbing on the surface. We could write a whole article about our favourite Baking with Layton moments (and we did) or put any video from the series on this list, but we’ve gone for the video where Daniel J. Layton, with the help of Sammy Paul and Hazel Hayes, makes a lemon Victoria sponge.
It epitomises everything we love about the series, with guests and hilarious tangents aplenty, including the now famous Lemony Eggs song, as well as half-decent instructions of how to bake your own cake. What’s not to love?
building a desk | doddlevloggle
No one is good at putting together IKEA furniture, that’s just a fact. Luckily, Dan is back, this time with dodie, to walk us through it. All you’ll need is pictures of Hillary Clinton, debates about La La land and whether or not something is “dodie yellow”, and jokes about Beyoncé.
And if all of that doesn’t set you on the path to becoming a DIY wizard, it’s also reassuring to find out two of your favourite YouTubers find Swedish flatpack as difficult as we do.
How Americans Make Tea (Sun Tea / Iced Tea) | Evan Edinger
The nights are drawing in and leaves are falling from trees, but there’s still time to pretend it’s summer, and Evan Edinger has the perfect video. Here, he teaches us how to make sun tea, a form of iced tea that’s popular in the American south.
It’s a refreshing sweet treat and, although we don’t have the weather to make it this time of year, with Halloween just gone and Christmas just around the corner, we’re sure you can find some reasons to make it. All you need is a sealed jug or jar, a few tea bags, sugar, some ice and you’re good to go! Once it’s brewed, get some friends together and enjoy!
Re-Working Vintage Clothing (DIY) | Sangiev
We all know the harm that fast fashion can do to the world and Sangiev Sriskumar‘s video is the perfect remedy to this. While the rest of his videos covering men’s fashion and lifestyle generally cover the higher end side of things, this time around he covers how to re-purpose vintage garments into something new.
Whether he’s injecting some Ryan Gosling cool into a vintage ivory bomber jacket in homage to the film Drive or emulating designer brands with an old ski coat, this video is perfect for the upcoming cold weather. Whether you’ve got the talent to do this yourself or it’s reminded you of that old winter coat you haven’t worn in years, you’re sure to learn from and be inspired by this video.
How To Make A Break Up Buddy | Tutorial | Will McDaniel
In this video, comedy short filmmaker Will McDaniel shows us how he made the Break Up Buddy from his sketch of the same name.
Now, we’ll be honest. This probably isn’t the most practical of DIY videos, and a latex monster prop isn’t as easy to make as a cake or iced tea. But this is a fascinating insight into how Will went about making the prop, and we think there’s plenty to get the creative juices flowing. He breaks out everything, from hot glue, liquid latex, creepy plastic eyes and pillow stuffing, making it seem easy enough that novices like us could do it!
And if any of you do make your own Break Up Buddy, please let us know, because nothing says “healthy emotional process” like making some latex nightmare fuel to get over your ex.
So there you have it…
Our Five of the Best: DIY Videos! We love seeing the hard work our fave YouTubers put into their work, but we love it even more when we can take some inspiration for things to do ourselves along the way!
