Eman Kellam’s game of Never Have I Ever with his dad reveals that family values do indeed transcend generations.
Videos exhibiting the views of older generations are a rare occurrence on YouTube. While this makes sense, as YouTube’s audience is largely populated by a younger demographic, it does limit dialogue, alienating the YouTube audience from older generations.
Attempting to break down these divides, Eman Kellam regularly features his father on his channel, exposing his audience to the views and wisdom of older generations. In his new video African Dad Plays Never Have I Ever, Eman has never so explicitly attempted to compare the views of two generations, so different in age and upbringing.
Eman’s first question, although light-hearted, immediately reveals a difference between the values of the father-son duo. He asks, “never have I ever faked being sick to get out of anything?” Shaking his head defiantly, Eman’s dad discloses that he has never falsified a sickness in order to deceive others for self-gain. Amazed by this, Eman tells his father again, “I don’t think you’re being honest.” Despite his son’s disbelief, Eman’s dad’s assertion of his honesty shines through.
Although the pair have their differences, it’s heartwarming (and hilarious) to see other behaviours and values remaining consistent across generations. Responding to “never have I ever kissed somebody on the first date,” Eman says “you don’t do them things man, on the first date, no!” Agreeing, his dad affirms “relax, chill,” with Eman adding: “Have a cup of tea!”
The father and son duo also agree that it’s “foul if you use other people’s toothbrush,” and bonded over the struggle of having to tell someone their baby is cute when it “was actually ugly.”
Watching the pair interact is wonderful and we couldn’t stop smiling. We applaud Eman for featuring his father in his videos so prominently and can’t wait to see more videos of them together!
