The gifts that keep on giving…
We absolutely adore seeing our favourite YouTubers using their platforms for good. From live streams and fundraisers, to charity concerts and events, we’re always left feeling utterly inspired seeing those we watch and look up to using their position to help those in need. It also gives an amazing opportunity to showcase the talents of some of our favourite YouTube stars.
From showcasing their impeccable singing skills to trying out accents and participating in snow-balloon fight, we simply can’t get enough, which is why we’ve decided to dedicate an article to the charitable activities our faves have been involved in. Here they are, our Five of the Best: It’s All For Charity!
My American Accent | charlieissocoollike
Way back in 2010, Charlie McDonnell co-hosted the 24-hour StickAid live stream, where all proceeds went to UNICEF. Alongside fellow YouTuber and StickAid founder, Myles Dyer, Charlie stayed up for a full 24 hours straight while the pair took part in several strange (and hilarious) fan-suggested challenges. One of these ended up being a Challenge Charlie, where he was forced to say very American things in a very American accent. Although Charlie’s accent was horrific (sorry), we don’t think we could’ve done much better, and we give him major props for giving it a try!
StickAid managed to raise over $30,000 for UNICEF and reached over 1.5 million viewers, with the help of Charlie, Myles and everyone else involved, and, from our recollection, it was a hilarious and inspiring event!
SIDEMEN FC VS YOUTUBE ALLSTARS HIGHLIGHTS 2017 | Sidemen
Last year, the boys from the Sidemen went head-to-head with a host of fellow YouTube stars in a charity football match to help raise money for Childline and the Charlton Athletic Community Trust.
The match was held at The Valley, with thousands of fans attending and many more tuning into the online stream. The Sidemen’s team, consisting of members KSI and Vikram Barn, was captained by Simon Minter, while the YouTube Allstars team included the likes of Will Lenney and Caspar Lee, and was captained by Callum Airey.
Tickets for the match were a hot commodity, with 10,000 reported to have been sold within 50 minutes of being released. After a win for the Sidemen in the 2016 charity match, and a win for the YouTube Allstars in the 2017 match, it was anybody’s game this time around, and with a score of 7-1, the Sidemen yet again took home the trophy.
Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart) YouTube Stars Version In Aid Of Teenage Cancer Trust | The Vamps
At 2014’s Summer In The City gathering, a group of YouTuber’s joined together with The Vamps to create a beautiful, classy cover of Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart) in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust. The cover contains vocals from the likes of Jim Chapman, Ebony Day and Sam King, amongst others, and is something we didn’t know we wanted, but are very glad exists.
The cover was flawlessly sung and produced, despite Benjamin Cook and Luke Cutforth‘s small slip up toward the beginning. (It’s okay, guys. That part’s too fast for us to sing as well!)
CRINGEMAS! w/ PewDiePie, Jacksepticeye, Emma Blackery, Markiplier, KickThePj | PewDiePie
Cringemas was a seven and a half hour charity live stream held by Revelmode and included Felix Kjellburg, Emma Blackery, Sean McLoughlin, PJ Liguori and Mark Fischbach. It featured the participants taking part in fun-filled activities, such as the mannequin challenge, turning each other into incredibly realistic snowmen using toilet roll and snowball fights. (With balloons, of course.) As a result, we always find ourselves returning to this stream whenever we’re in need of a good laugh.
The team managed to raise an amazing £300,000 for the charity (RED), which aims to combat HIV and AIDS across the globe, a cause we feel everyone should support.
The YouTube Boyband – it’s all about you(tube) | Comic Relief
2014 saw the rise of our absolute favourite group ever, The YouTube Boyband. Consisting of Jim Chapman, Marcus Butler, Alfie Deyes, Joe Sugg and Caspar Lee, the boyband covered McFly’s All About You in support of Comic Relief. From the iconic white suits and Jim’s enviable air guitar skills, to Marky Butt Butt’s legendary stage invasion and Joe’s surprisingly good vocals, this cover is flawless and we’re constantly eager for the boys to reunite and release another single.
The YouTube Boyband managed to amass over 14 million views on this video and raised thousands for Sports Relief as a result. We couldn’t be more proud of them.
So there you have it…
Our Five of the Best: It’s All For Charity! We absolutely love seeing the hard work our fave YouTubers put into giving back to others. It gives us the warmest feelings in our hearts, and it doesn’t hurt that many of their charity events have left us experiencing the giggles!
