Life in plastic, it’s fantastic!
If you live on the internet like we do, you’ve probably at least heard of the word “kawaii”. But you may not know that there’s a whole community on YouTube and other social media dedicated to Japanese and kawaii culture, fashion, and music!
This community is fun, bright, and global, but there’s quite a few UK-based creators that you should definitely check out. So here’s our Five of the Best: Kawaii J-fashion YouTubers.
Caspian Okazaki
This channel is a great place to start if you’re looking for a relative veteran of the UK kawaii scene. Caspian Okazaki is a non-binary transmasculine vlogger who makes adorable sparkly content about fashion, cruelty-free, and vegan life, as well as LGBTQ+ issues. His channel has loads of videos to help you get into the culture such as vlogs from meetups and cons, as well as wardrobe tours and brand reviews.
Caspian has been wearing J-fashion for over five years and is often referred to as “J-fashion father” by many in the UK scene. He’ll happily adopt anyone!
Rachel Pinku
Rachel Pinku is an adorable, laid-back vlogger who has also been in the J-fashion scene for quite some time. Her videos are so friendly, they feel like you’re just sitting down to talk about pastel fashion with a pal! Rachel’s channel is super fashion-focused, full of lookbooks, hauls, and reviews galore!
She also has plenty of vlogs from the UK’s biggest Japanese culture festival, Hyper Japan, so if you ever thought about going then her channel is the perfect place to check out.
Eleanor Medhurst
Eleanor Medhurst lives her life entirely in pink, and you can see that just by looking at her channel page! This bright and bubbly gal makes all sorts of content: fashion, politics, mental health, LGBT+ issues. You name it, she probably has a video on it. Eleanor is a wonderful positive pink force on YouTube and her channel is sure to make your day!
Eleanor’s style is is more Western-inspired J-fashion than branded Japanese J-fashion so watching her videos may be a good place to start if you’re new to the scene or just want to stick to more accessible styles!
Lunarsoliver
Lunarsoliver a.k.a. Ollie is a wonderful J-fashion and transgender vlogger. He started his channel to talk about J-fashion and has since started documenting his transition on his channel too. There can be a lot of confusion around trans men in particular who choose to wear J-fashion as the colours and style can be seen as “feminine”, so if that’s something you’re worried about then definitely check out Ollie’s videos! He has also recently started talking about his deafness in more depth.
Ollie is also part of a Scottish based transgender collab channel called scotTRANS which covers all sorts of topics around being transgender in the UK.
Synthpop Circus
Synthpop Circus a.k.a. Sammy is a kawaii-loving vlogger, crafter, and surface design student. Her channel is a mish-mash of cuteness and definitely worth checking out! There you can find hauls, tutorials, and videos about surface design. She went to Japan fairly recently and vlogged her entire trip so if you want some adorable travel vlogs just for fun or for information, definitely check out Sammy’s series!
If you’re looking for more unusual hauls, such as sticker and washi tape hauls, then Synthpop Circus is definitely the channel for you.
