Ricky Gervais’s Humanity meets The JaackMaate Podcast.
Jack Dean and his co-host Tom Norris launched their podcast earlier this year. The special Christmas episode features the biggest guest they’ve had so far: Mr Ricky Gervais. Thanks to his legendary show with Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington, which has been downloaded at least 300 million times, he’s a podcasting icon himself. A little something to live up to perhaps?
Backdropped by the foliage at the YouTube Space London, they delve into many different topics such as fame, hecklers, and, of course, who else but Donald Trump? With their distinctly similar senses of humour, the pair bounce off each other perfectly, making us laugh the whole way through.
Within two-and-a-half minutes, the phrase “being alive is a minefield” is uttered. This, in a nutshell, shows you all you need to know about the dynamic of the remaining 55 minutes. Also, just a warning for anyone in the future reading this: perhaps stay away from 100-year-old Ricky in his nursing home. Watch it until the end, you’ll understand.
Something that shows what a seasoned professional Ricky is, is his interaction with both of the hosts. He doesn’t focus his energy just on Jack, but includes Tom in a real way, something that guests with less media experience wouldn’t think to do. It makes for a more inclusive and richer atmosphere throughout.
This isn’t the first video that Jack has had Ricky feature in. It is, however, the one that seems to show the relationship that has started to grow between the pair, resulting in respect from both sides. (Aside, that is, from Ricky’s continual disappointment in Jack’s ripped jeans.)
Jack has made no secret of the fact that Ricky is his comedy hero so we can tell that having him on his hour-long podcast is a real highlight of his career. To quote Ricky’s answer to the final question, “It’s all about the journey”, and this video shows that Jack is firmly on his way to bigger things.
