Director Bertie Gilbert talks to TenEighty about the inspiration and themes behind the music video for You, from Dodie Clark’s upcoming EP of the same name.
“It’s a song that’s truly quite tragic, but not melancholic in execution,” says Bertie. “It’s super catchy and vibrant, whilst maintaining some sad subject matter. Very romantic, very sweet, very dodie.”

Elaborating on the thematic style of the video, he says: “The lyrics are super sad while the production is lighter, so I wanted to incorporate and interpret that contrast. We have some incredibly wacky elements offset by some softer, sadder moments.”
You, dodie’s second EP, became the Number One album in the iTunes preorder charts within a day of being announced.

“I was approached by my friend Sammy Paul, the sort of ‘showrunner’ of all of dodie’s music videos, and was given some very loose things we needed to hit,” Bertie explains. “For instance, we’re shooting this in Paris, so I wanted to incorporate some more Parisian techniques and motifs going forward. There’s lots of mad stuff in there.”
No rest for the wicked, this weekend we're off to Paris to shoot @doddleoddle's next music video 'You'. Directed by @bertieglbrt.

Bertie talks frankly about what he is hoping to take from the experience for his own filmmaking: “I’ve made lots of short films and the odd music video, but nothing on this scale,” he says. “It’ll be a small crew, but in terms of who this is gonna reach and shooting in another country, it’s a pretty big deal!
“This whole thing will be very rhythmically driven, so I hope I learn a thing or two about the importance of rhythm, whether it’s a dialogue scene or a music video,” he adds.
“I’m so excited to see it in motion! The whole thing stems from a weird fascination I’ve had with a certain visual motif that I’ve wanted to incorporate into other stuff, but this is the one it’s settled into! It’s very different, but I still think it’s very me. I’m excited!”
dodie’s You EP is available to preorder digitally and physically, with a release date of 11 August.
