“Is the future going to be all girl?”
“We can only hope.”
Here at TenEighty HQ, we’re big fans of Doctor Who. Really big. Bigger on the inside big, you might say.
Fortunately, we’re not the only ones who love the show, as many of our faves have been reacting to the news that the Thirteenth Doctor will be none other than Broadchurch‘s Jodie Whittaker!
Whittaker will be the first female Doctor to appear in the show’s run (we’re not counting the 1999 Comic Relief special featuring Joanna Lumley), so it’s unsurprising that the announcement would be a hot topic of conversation on Twitter and in the media, with many debating what a female Doctor means for the show and its direction.
Here’s what our faves had to say!
ABOUT TIME!!!
ABOUT TIME!!!
Perfect choice. 😃😃😃 Welcome aboard, Jodie. #DoctorWho #Doctor13 pic.twitter.com/3nm6XgoBrR

Some men (it's always men) are feeling fragile right now. Hug them. Tell them it'll all be ok. Remind them that #DoctorWho… isn't real.

— Benjamin Cook (@benjamin_cook) July 16, 2017
Benjamin Cook, who is also a writer at Doctor Who Magazine, obviously knew this was happening – how could he not?! – and we’re left wishing that our writing came with these kind of perks. Nonetheless, we’d also like to take this opportunity to welcome Whittaker to the Whovian family!
Thrilled, we say!
Think of all those little girls in playgrounds who got told they could only play as the companion. Sonic screwdrivers at the ready, Girlies!
— Carrie Hope Fletcher (@CarrieHFletcher) July 16, 2017
Up till now, little girls have always seen themselves as the Doctor’s companion, and while there have been a few male companions too, men could also see themselves represented in the Doctor. Doctor Who is arguably one of Britain’s biggest cultural phenomena and now, as Carrie Hope Fletcher states, little girls get the opportunity to see themselves as the hero – and we couldn’t be more excited!
Sonic tampon
what doctor who will be: the exact same
what angry people think it will be: come along companion, we must travel to the LIPSTICK DIMENSION— savannah brown (@savannahbrown) July 16, 2017
sonic tampon
— savannah brown (@savannahbrown) July 16, 2017
Savannah Brown amused us with her satirical theories on how the show will change now that there’s a woman at the helm… Should we expect to see a sonic tampon in her next merch collection?
Dealing with sexism like a boss
Took a break from holiday reading to see if #Doctor13 is any goo- pic.twitter.com/Kt0nFeSMl3
— Ellen Rose (@icklenellierose) July 16, 2017
1) this means a lot as a Dr Who fan
2) this can add new perspectives to the story (hi dr dealing with sexism like a boss)
3) JODIE W THO— Ellen Rose (@icklenellierose) July 16, 2017
Ellen Rose was also keen to speculate on how Whittaker’s casting could add a new perspective to the show, with the very real possibility that the Doctor will experience sexism as she travels through human history. Not that things are perfect in the modern day, either, judging by the angry reactions of a small number of viewers to the announcement! Come on, everyone, it’s 2017!
Add more women to the Doctor Who team
THRILLED for #DoctorWho13 but dreading how much JW might be blamed for bad writing. @bbcdoctorwho, hire female writers. Talk to a woman. Pls
— Liam Dryden (@LiamDrydenEtc) July 16, 2017
Liam Dryden shared his concerns about the effect having a woman in the lead role would have on the blame game if the next series isn’t up to par. Having a female Doctor creates an extra level of scrutiny from those who are opposed to the change. Sadly, if the writing and production are unsuccessful, the likelihood of another woman being cast as the Doctor will be put into jeopardy.
A woman?! How dare they!
It's so unrealistic for an alien that time travels in a police box to be a woman. It completely ruins the suspension of disbelief.
— taha (@KhanStopMe) July 16, 2017
Taha Khan also had some choice words for those angry about the reveal. Besides, if the Master can be a female, why can’t the Doctor?!
Any girl can be the Doctor
I will never tire of hearing girls know that THEY could be the Doctor. https://t.co/gSznLuCrrh
— Kezia Newson 🌞 (@KeziaRose) July 16, 2017
Elsewhere, Kezia Newson shared this poignant video from Jenny Trout of her daughter reacting to Whittaker’s casting. The realisation from girls that they could be one of the most iconic characters on TV is incredibly heartwarming in our eyes.
#Proud
I'm so proud of my show. #DoctorWho
— Luke Spillane 🚀 (@lukespillane) July 16, 2017
Could we do an article about Doctor Who without including Doctor Who: The Fan Show host and superfan Luke Spillane? Of course not! And this tweet accurately sums up our feelings on the matter. Good job, BBC!
Dean Dobbs, the Doctor? Maybe next time…
It was quite unprofessional of the BBC to fire me in this way, but I'm glad Jodie Whittaker got the part.
Better luck next time, my ass. https://t.co/cWXVHG0qPL
— Dean Dobbs ✨ (@DeanDobbs) July 16, 2017
Meanwhile, it was a sad day for Dean Dobbs, who discovered that he’d yet again been overlooked as the Doctor. Better luck next time!
So many fans, both old and new
Woah. I might watch now! https://t.co/dv9haJUYhk
— Alex Bertie (@Alex_Bertie) July 16, 2017
I'll be honest, I'm more excited about Moffat leaving so I might have the prospect of enjoying the series again.
But also, lady, woo! 👩🏼⚕️
— Jazza John (@JazzaJohn) July 16, 2017
okay fine I'll watch doctor who again
— festive lad 🎄 (@neonfiona) July 16, 2017
The announcement also drew old and new fans back to the show, such as NeonFiona, Jazza John, and Alex Bertie, which we think is pretty awesome!
DOOOWEEEDOOO
By this point, it’s clear how excited the YouTube community – and us – are, and we’re just thrilled to bits that our faves love the show as much as we do! What do you think of Sunday’s announcement? Tweet us at @TenEightyUK with your thoughts!
