Oh, summer weather, how we’ve missed you!
On second thoughts, could we maybe chill out (pun intended) with the 32°C heat? We’re all for tucking away our coats and boots until October, but we’d also like to go outside without fear of spontaneously combusting or melting on the spot… Although, it feels just as warm inside as it does outside. Curse our lack of air conditioning units!
Luckily, we’ve got just the thing to distract you from the excessive heat: YouTube videos! So if you’re like the throngs of us trying to beat the heat, take a seat and bide your time with the always popular Weekly Round-Up!
Telling Friends I’m Pregnant!! | sprinkleofglitter
Trust us when we tell you there isn’t a better way to start off your week than this video from Louise Pentland.
If you haven’t already heard the news and squealed in delight, Louise recently announced that she’s expecting Darcy 2.0! That’s right, another Baby Pentland is on the way and we’re not the only ones who are excited. Louise has gone and captured some of her friends’ reactions to the news and it’s about as aww-inducing as it sounds.
REALLY THOUGH, OUR FACES HURT FROM SMILING SO MUCH. SEND AID.
The real danger of internet addiction. | Boyinaband
Dave Brown comes to us this week educating about the perils of *gulp* internet addiction, and honestly, we’re feeling a little attacked right now.
Like us, you might look at this title and scoff. Me? Addicted to the internet? No way! But like any Dave Brown video, his arguments are eloquent and complete with several sources for you to peruse at your own leisure. It might be time to invest in one of those productivity apps! Just don’t hook up our staff to those conductivity-measuring addiction tests just yet – we feel as though passing with flying colours might be a hair (or ten) out of reach.
Why Trevor Baxter Doesn’t Like Dinner Parties | Thelaserbearguy
Introverted? Would you rather stay home than grab a bite to eat with a couple of friends? Sounds like you and Trevor Baxter would be great buds! Although, we wouldn’t invite him over for dinner anytime soon.
Matt Ley‘s most recent short film, Why Trevor Baxter Doesn’t Like Dinner Parties, explores the true perils of adulting: venturing outside for dinner and that awful small talk akin to the conversations you have with those relatives you see once a year. The film has several high points, but where it shines brightest is its stellar writing. In fact, it’s hard to believe this film is less than 10 minutes long when the world and its characters are so strongly built. As for the dinner parties? We’ll stick to our couches and Deliveroo meals for now, thanks!
Asexual Denial and Bisexual Erasure | Evan Edinger
If there’s one thing YouTube is great at, it’s providing a wide variety of viewers with videos they’re interested in. However, even within topics of discussion like sexuality, there are some identities that are glossed over. This week, Evan Edinger helps to balance that discussion.
There has been a lot of great content about sexuality and gender identity throughout Pride Month, including Evan’s own video last week, discussing what identifying as demisexual meant to him. This week, he’s rocked it again, shining light onto some of the stigmas surrounding bisexuality and asexuality both within the LGBTQ+ community and out. Together with Connie Glynn and Will Priest, Evan has created an enviably open space for discussion and education about underrepresented sexualities. Is there a better way to celebrate Pride Month? We think not.
TALKING PICTURES with JACK HOWARD | ChewingSand
A brand-spanking new film commentary series by the lovely Hazel Hayes? Yep, sign us up!
Her newest series is Talking Pictures and the inaugural episodes hosts Jack Howard to explain his love for one of his favourite films. While we’re all for witty takedowns of films that… er… “miss the mark”, as they say, sometimes it’s nice to just sit and watch people talk about the things they love. Seriously, if you thought Jack was giddy about talking films in general, wait until you see him talk about a film he’s head-over-heels for. Positively adorable.
Grab some lemonade or a pitcher of Pimm’s, we’ve got more videos to keep you busy!
With yet another producing credit under his belt, Tim Hautekiet showcases the trailer for his newest short film, Spark (and keys us in to the film’s very real political context).
Part instructional guide, part lesson on coping with nostalgia, Chase Madsen’s latest video with New Age Creators will definitely inspire you to make new memories this summer.
Angela Innes is back on her poetry game this week, with her melodic timbre bringing us a short poem about creative blocks.
Hitting us with a new music video to accompany his latest single is Conor Maynard, who definitely has our preemptive vote for song of the summer (and song to get stuck in our heads the fastest).
