The perfect blend of humour, beauty, and entertainment…
One of the main attractions of YouTube is that it allows people to create whatever they want, however they want, with complete authenticity. There are no rules, no regulations, and no-one to tell you that you can’t do something. Muna, on her channel DorkyMini, is a perfect example this creative freedom, and why it’s a wonderful thing.
As a subscriber to Muna, you will be treated to GRWMs and makeup tutorials one week, and skits and hilarious vlogs the next. Although this swapping between genres could be confusing, what ties together all of Muna’s content, no matter what she creates, is her personality. She’s not afraid to dance, sing, talk without a script, and do whatever she wants to do that week – with hilarious results.
Often you will click on a video such as Outfit Of The Day Attempt // Casual Everyday expecting to be watching one thing, and (not to spoil it for you) end up watching something completely different. So be warned: do not drink anything while watching her videos. Speaking from experience, you will find yourself laughing unexpectedly and spilling it all over your keyboard.
Skits such as Every Reality Show Ever are some of her favourite videos to make. “It was the first skit I had ever actually taken the time out to write and plan,” she tells us. “It was so much fun to film it all then edit it and laugh at myself.”
As well as scripted, her unscripted comedy – “the stupid videos, the ones of me dancing in my room to childhood theme song remixes” – are another of her favourites. “Those videos are never planned, they just represent the side of me that nobody ever gets to see.”
In her videos it’s easy to see her creative inspirations, for example, YouTube channel 4YallEntertainment: “Their humour and the way they edit their videos just speaks to me, and they inspire me to make better content. Their vlogging channel is my favourite channel. You will not be bored for a second because there is something funny happening every 30 seconds.”
For Muna, who started to make videos aged 14, YouTube has always been a place for authenticity: “I started out of boredom but it became a way for me to express myself.”
Since then, YouTube has continued to be important to her. “YouTube is amazing because it means something different for a lot of people,” she explains. “For some, it’s a place where they can show their creative work. For some, it’s a place where they can brand themselves. For me, it’s a place where I can be myself with no worries. It’s my safe space, a place that has a huge impact on my personality and the person I am today.”
Muna’s family make regular appearances on her channel. “My family love it and support it even though they are always making fun out of it!” Her mother in particular features often, in videos such as My Mum Does My Makeup and Learning How To Drive (Ft Mother). She shares the same humour as Muna, and the love between them is obvious and a joy to see. “She’s my favourite human being in the world and she’s made me laugh for 20 years. The videos I make with her show our relationship perfectly.”
Muna’s mother is one of her biggest inspirations. “She’s taught me that nobody is ever too old to chase their dreams and nothing is ever impossible. I’ve watched her accomplish everything she’s wanted to throughout any situation and it just motivates me to do everything I want to do.” As YouTube is generally used by young people, seeing someone of an older generation engage with the platform like this is refreshing to see, and relationships such as these should be celebrated.
With such a wide range of videos on Muna’s channel, it is exciting to think of what the future will hold for her and her content. “I just hope to continue doing YouTube and being myself,” she shares. “It’s interesting to watch myself grow up and change to the person I am today. I want to be 70 years old and just laugh at myself, that’s the goal.”
We’re excited to see it!
