Every once in a while, a film comes along that manages to take a hold of viewers and leave them completely and utterly obsessed.
There are a few that come to mind – The Dark Knight, The Breakfast Club, Avatar – but one that’s recently managed to keep us hooked is La La Land. You know, the Oscar-winning movie with the killer soundtrack and classy dance moves. And really, does that surprise you? You should know by now that we here at TenEighty HQ are suckers for a good soundtrack.
To celebrate the release of La La Land on DVD, we decided to scour the depths of YouTube to find what are arguably five of the best covers we’ve ever heard (and no, that’s definitely not an exaggeration). From medleys to ukes, collabs to violins, this list is filled with everything a La La Land fan could possibly need.
Oh, and did we mention we went international this time? Yep, we’re switching things up.
Someone In The Crowd – with friends! | La La Land cover | doddleoddle
Kicking off our list is this collaborative effort from Dodie Clark, Daniel J. Layton, Sammy Paul, Hazel Hayes, and Jack Howard. It’s no secret this group of pals are major fans of La La Land, so it was really only a matter of time before they came together to record the cover to end all covers.
This rendition of Someone In The Crowd has everything you need: a group of people who love the film, friendship, and an easygoing vibe that’ll leave you with a huge smile on your face. In fact, it left us in such a good mood that we ended up filming our own version! Unfortunately, we’re as tone deaf as badgers, so the video will never see the light of day. Sorry to disappoint.
Be sure to watch the video carefully. You might just notice a wild Bertie Gilbert appear toward the end.
LA LA LAND MEDLEY – Violin, Viola, & Piano Cover | rainbowpig2
Who ever said a cover needs to include singing? Why can’t it just be about the instrumentation? Well, it appears US vlogger and musician Tiffany Chang agrees with us because she’s gone and recorded an instrumental medley of some of the film’s top tracks, and let’s just say it’s the cover we didn’t know we needed.
With just a violin, piano, and viola, Tiffany is able to create a musical piece that sounds as if it should be on the film’s official soundtrack! We’re always a sucker for instrumental tracks, so obviously Tiffany’s rendition has us all ears. Whether you need some background music while cooking, something to lull you to sleep or simply a backing track for your life, we highly recommend you give this cover a listen. You won’t be disappointed.
La La Land – “Lovely Night Dance” | Carson Dean
Do you find yourself watching La La Land and wishing you could pull off the dance moves Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling execute flawlessly? Us too. Sadly, we have two left feet and have failed on all attempts, but you know who didn’t? US vlogger Carson Dean and Kausha Campbell.
The third cover on our list isn’t a musical one: instead, it’s a dance video, in which Carson and Kausha execute the dance sequence from Lovely Night, and may we just say it’s a brilliant video. Honestly, we don’t know what we love most: the dance moves, the pair’s outfits, the scenery…? It’s all so eye-catching! If only they would upload a tutorial for us. Maybe then we’d be able to pull off the choreography.
Want to see how the pair’s dancing compares to the original? Be sure to check out their side-by-side comparison! If you ask us, they pulled it off perfectly!
ANOTHER DAY OF SUN – La La Land (Ukulele cover) | Angy Ceballos
In case you weren’t aware, we here at TenEighty HQ love nothing more than the simplicity of the ukulele. For such a small instrument, it has the ability to take a song and turn it into something completely different, which is why we were drawn to this cover of Another Day of Sun by Spanish vlogger Angy Ceballos.
If you’re a fan of stripped-down performances that allow you to focus on the lyrics and melody, then we highly suggest you give this one a listen. Angy’s voice paired with the uke creates something special, and we love it when the single video screen splits, allowing Angy to harmonise with herself.
Trust us, this rendition will give you a whole new appreciation for the track.
LA LA LAND MEDLEY (ACAPELLA) | Indy Dang
Closing out our list is another medley, but one you probably didn’t expect (unless you read the title): acapella. Yep, it’s true! Someone’s gone and made an acapella medley for La La Land, and that someone is the very talented US vlogger Indy Dang, with a little help from Lana Dann.
The video overall is beautifully done, with the pair’s simple outfit and background changes creating an atmosphere that perfectly matches the medley. And honestly, if we hadn’t been told that the video was acapella, we probably wouldn’t have even realised – that’s how good the pair’s vocals are! Seriously, why is it that everyone is so talented and we’re just here, struggling to figure out how to play the spoons? So unfair.
So there you have it…
