It’s that time of year again, when everyone dons a red nose in support of charity!
On 24 March, Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day will be in full swing, with those involved working together to raise money to help fight world poverty and injustice. It’s a campaign that’s been underway for nearly 30 years (that’s older than us!), and with each one more and more people get involved – including our favourite YouTubers. Over the years, our faves have used their audience reach and creative chops to help raise awareness for Comic Relief, and in doing so have raised thousands of pounds. So in honour of this year’s campaign, we’ve decided to share with you our top five favourite Red Nose Day videos, all courtesy of the YouTubers we know and love.
Here they are, Five of the Best: YouTubers for Comic Relief.
Honey And Feathers | charlieissocoollike
To celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Red Nose Day, as well as to mark the twenty-fifth and final Challenge Charlie, Charlie McDonnell teamed up with Dan Howell, Khyan Mansley, and a surprise guest to help turn him into some sort of Big Bird/Tweety Pie hybrid.
This whole video was made possible due to Charlie’s embarrassing blunder a few years earlier, where he had tried to record a charity song with comedic musician Tim Minchin, but failed to record any audio, and we found ourselves in fits of laughter throughout the whole thing! Our favourite moment? When Tim made a surprise appearance and exacted revenge on Charlie! Who knew payback could, quite literally, be so sweet!
The YouTube Boy Band – it’s all about you(tube) | Comic Relief
Did you know that it’s all about You(Tube)?
For Red Nose Day 2014, Marcus Butler, Caspar Lee, Joe Sugg, Alfie Deyes, and Jim Chapman teamed up to create what is arguably the best boyband ever to come into existence. Dubbed “The YouTube Boyband”, the group created a… unique cover of McFly’s It’s All About You, and the result left us hitting Repeat time and time again.
We found ourselves having a hard time narrowing down our favourite moment: was it the Marky Butt Butt rap break, Joe’s singing (which pleasantly shocked us all), the fanfic-worthy pillow fight, or the group’s synchronised dance moves? How about we say they were all our favourites, so we don’t hurt anyone’s feelings?
WAXING MY LEGS FOR COMIC RELIEF | Oli White
Have you ever experienced the pain of having your legs waxed? Well, it’s obvious that Oli White hadn’t before his video for Comic Relief, because we’re pretty sure he would never have agreed to it if he’d known what he was in for.
Yes, you read right: for Comic Relief 2013, Oli decided to film himself having his legs waxed, and boy, did we find ourselves wincing each time the beautician ripped off one of the waxing strips. But hey, at least his legs were silky smooth afterward! Thank you, Oli, for putting yourself through all that pain in order to help raise money for charity. We know it couldn’t have been too fun an experience.
Brett Domino’s ‘How To Make A Charity Single’ | Brett Domino
As we’ve seen with the YouTube Boyband, music is a great way to grab the attention of potential donors, so of course the BBC and Comic Relief would ask Brett Domino and Steven Peavis to write up a charity single for Red Nose Day. The catch? They only had three hours to do it.
Honestly, we’re not too sure how they managed to pull it off, as we didn’t realise just how much actually went into writing a song. You need to look at the audience you’re trying to appeal to and the message you want to send, and you need to make sure the chord and lyrical choices are spot on – seriously, just thinking about it all has us feeling stressed! Thankfully, the pair were successful, and with a help of a few online personalities – Tom Scott, Quinn Humphreys, Luke Cutforth, Doug Armstrong, Bethan Leadley, Ebony Day, Alex Rolinson, Jenny Bede, Huw Samuel, Leslie Wai, and Jayne Sharp – they were able to pen a single that pushes listeners to make a change.
DAN AND PHIL BLINDFOLDED MAKEUP CHALLENGE | danisnotonfire
Last, but certainly not least, we have Dan Howell and Phil Lester‘s blindfolded makeover video, which was created in support of Comic Relief’s “Make Your Face Funny For Money” campaign – and yes, it’s just as funny as we expected it to be.
A true phangirl’s dream with its 50 Shades of Phan undertones, the video allows us to see the pair’s knowledge (or lack of knowledge) of all things makeup. And while they might not know as much as some of us, we feel it can be agreed that they both managed to create some catwalk-ready looks. Honestly, why don’t we look this pretty whenever we wear makeup?
So there you have it…
