After winning an award for Best Newcomer on YouTube, Josh Pieters spoke to TenEighty to talk about his journey so far…
What is the first YouTube video you ever watched?
JOSH: “A few years after YouTube had started, Caspar [Lee] and I watched loads of videos together. One of my favourites back in the day was by Peter Chao and I think he’s super funny. This was before Caspar was making videos or even thought about it. After watching stuff together for so long he said he’d give it a go – that’s where it all started!”
What would you be doing if you weren’t making YouTube videos?
JOSH: “Well, two summers ago, when I was playing cricket in London, I got glandular fever but I always used to help Caspar edit and film anyway – so I’d probably still be doing things on YouTube even if I wasn’t making videos. I have always enjoyed it but never thought it’d be something I’d actually do. It’s so exciting and feels quite surreal. Things have happened so fast!”
What advice can you give aspiring content creators?
JOSH: “Well as YouTube becomes bigger you really have to make things that are original and things that you enjoy making. It’s such a saturated industry now that you need to find your own path and do your own type of thing. It really is hard, especially if you’re uploading every week. There have been weeks where I haven’t been very happy with the video I’ve had to put out – so it is hard to do it every single week, but you have to try your absolute best. Even if it’s not a totally original idea, if you can put your own spin on it, that’s what people appreciate.”
What is your most embarrassing video?
JOSH: “The one prank I did where we went out in public and filled nappies with chocolate mousse. We got a friend to drop the nappies in a bin and then I’d walk past on camera and pick the bag out of the bin and start eating the chocolate out of the nappy. Just having that on the internet is fairly embarrassing but it makes me laugh still!”
Can you recommend a YouTuber that we should be watching?
JOSH: “Two of my favourite YouTubers are two twins from Australia who have a channel called TheRackaRacka. They are absolutely amazing and I love their videos. Some of it is a bit graphic but they do a lot of special effects and they’re really funny too. They have a series with a Ronald McDonald character they’ve created which is really great. Their sketches can be quite violent but they are really well-made videos and they do everything themselves.”
Would you rather…
…stay up or sleep for 60 hours?
JOSH: “Sleep for 60 hours!”
…eat pizza or chocolate?
JOSH: “Pizza.”
…have unlimited money or unlimited knowledge?
JOSH: “Knowledge.”
…never use technology again or never speak to Caspar again?
JOSH: “Oh no! … technology?”
…live with Oli White or Mikey Pearce?
JOSH: “Oli White.”
…roast yourself or roast someone else?
JOSH: “Roast myself, definitely!”
…win Best Newcomer or Best Prank?
JOSH: “Can I say both?”
