Calum McSwiggan has pleaded guilty to charges of vandalism after claiming to be the victim of a hate crime.
In June this year, Calum claimed that he was “beaten up by three guys” outside a gay nightclub in West Hollywood, which he attended with YouTubers Melanie Murphy, Riyadh Khalaf, and Doug Armstrong following VidCon 2016.
The local Sherriff’s Department were “unable to substantiate his claim”, but “observed him vandalising a car”.
Since then, Calum has been involved in a five-month long investigation. He has now pleaded guilty to damaging one of the alleged culprits’ cars.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Calum has been sentenced to three years felony probation and 52 anger-management counselling sessions, and ordered to pay $7,000 in restitution. Officials stated that as part of the plea, the charge of filing a false police report has been dropped.
Calum tweeted to explain the events, saying that he never lied about the assault, but that he regrets damaging the car:
After five months of investigation this charge has finally been dropped. I never lied and I'm grateful that the world can now see that.
