On 3 September, Joe Sugg and Caspar Lee took part in what was surely the most difficult challenge of their lives: they had to stay completely quiet for three hours.
We know, we were surprised they agreed to the challenge too, given their love of pranking and poking fun at each other! But being the competitive duo they are, they accepted, and in doing so joined the host of YouTubers dedicating their time to Stand Up To Cancer, raising money for cancer research.
However, #StandUpWithYT weren’t going to let Caspar and Joe off too easily. Hosts Jack Maynard and Will Best set up challenges and games to make the boys talk, laugh, moan, or scream, making sure it was the hardest three hours ever. And help was on hand from the likes of Scola Dondo, Lucy and Lydia Connell, Luke Shayler, Trent Owers, Josh Pieters, Jamie Laing, and many more.
If you were like us, you booked off the entire afternoon and huddled around your computer with a bowl of popcorn, ready to watch whatever antics ensued – and many did. Here are our personal highlights from an afternoon packed full of hilarity.
The pressure was real

Before they’d even arrived at the YouTube Space in London, Joe was already trying to psych Caspar out in the hopes of winning the challenge. The tactic appeared to have worked, with Caspar showing us that his nerves and the pressure were already starting to get to him.
The question is: would Joe reign supreme at the end?
Prepping for three hours of silence is serious business
Any last words @Caspar_Lee & @Joe_Sugg? HERE WE GO!!! #StandUpwithYT pic.twitter.com/1GZIWLl3Na

Who knew the phrase “any last words?” could be taken so seriously? We couldn’t understand a word Caspar and Joe were saying when the organisers gave them the final countdown.
First up: Trent and Luke

We’ve got to hand it to Trent and Luke, the pair certainly made it difficult for Caspar and Joe to keep their silence (and cool) with this ice cream chugging contest.
It might look like fun, kids, but trust us, you don’t want to chug a litre of ice cream in a minute. It’s all jolly good fun until someone gets the ice cream headache to end all ice cream headaches. We know this from experience.
Flying doughnuts?!
Let’s be honest: if you were given the opportunity to throw donuts at your favourite YouTubers, you probably wouldn’t say no. Don’t even try to say you’d pass it up.
Everyone needs a toy mallet in their lives
Oh, Caspar, you should have known what would happened if you made any noise whatsoever. But hey, at least it was a toy mallet. We wouldn’t want anything messing up that awesome coif of yours. That’d be a downright shame.
Leave it to Scola to give the boys a workout
Highlights of @ScolaDondo SLAYING the boys. @Caspar_Lee cheats, @Joe_Sugg fumbles with a watermelon 🍉 #StandUpwithYT pic.twitter.com/jUEsYwJFzj

“SLAYING” would be an understatement on this occasion. Scola worked the boys out in a way only she could, showing off her fab fitness style while also managing to bring the laughs. We mean, the use of fruit? A++ Scola. We applaud you.
We were working up a sweat just watching the live stream!
Communication is hard when you can’t speak

You’d think that, in a the world of texting and other amazing technology, communicating without actually speaking would be a simple task. Turns out, it’s much more difficult than we thought.
Zoella pizza, anyone?
Who do you think had made the best @Zoella pizza art? @Joe_Sugg or @Caspar_Lee #StandUpwithYT pic.twitter.com/X1KUYlMxoB

One of our favourite moments from the entire live stream was definitely the Zoe Sugg pizza contest. The art was… well… something, but what we really want to know is whether they ate the pizzas after the stream. We need to know these things, guys. We are journalists after all, and this is very important information.

Lucy and Lydia brought their makeup genius to the London YouTube Space and treated Joe and Caspar to the best makeovers of their lives. Look at that eyeshadow, the lipstick.
We wish Lucy and Lydia could be our personal makeup artists.
Catwalk-ready!
Who's up for a highlight? We loved @jamielaing_UK and @Anchally30's stylish fashion segment! #StandUpwithYT pic.twitter.com/RYrKJpxLIk

First they got all dolled up, and then they got front row seats to Jamie’s fashion overhaul! Looking pretty hip, Jamie!
And the winner is…
AND THE SILENCE IS OVER!!! And a last minute win from @Caspar_Lee! But who do you think won overall? #StandUpwithYT pic.twitter.com/uy8yDernAV
— StandUpToCancerUK (@StandUp2C) September 3, 2016
Would it surprise you to know that the challenge ended in a tie? Yes, A TIE. How did they manage to do that?! Apparently both boys made noises on three occasions. Despite this, fans online voted Joe the winner in a Twitter poll (although this wasn’t announced on air).
Everyone was overcome with pride
so so so proud !! @StandUp2C #StandUpwithYT pic.twitter.com/mxGz9tqyoF

#StandUpwithYT @StandUp2C @Joe_Sugg @Caspar_Lee well done! I can't believe you stayed quiet. Thank you for supporting this amazing charity💕💕

Not only did everyone have a good time, they also helped raise money for cancer research, which had everyone feeling warm and fuzzy. We were super proud of Caspar and Joe, as well as everyone involved. Thank you all for supporting such a great cause. *hugs*
Would you be able to keep quiet for three hours?
We know we couldn’t. Imagine us not saying a peep for that long – we think we’d go crazy! We just have so much to say, and who would deliver you all the YouTube-y news? So props to Joe and Caspar! They did an awesome challenge for a great cause.
