Charlie McDonnell has unveiled the cover for his debut book, Fun Science: A Guide to Life, the Universe and Why Science is so Awesome.
The cover was created by Dave Brown, who also designed Dan Howell and Phil Lester‘s The Amazing Book Is Not On Fire.
Speaking with TenEighty, Charlie explains the creative thinking behind the cover: “Probably my favourite about it is how it ties in the index cards I use all the time, which appear in the background of all my recent videos.”
Charlie, a self-proclaimed science fan, began the Fun Science series on his YouTube channel in 2011. Explaining how his book is different from those released by his fellow YouTubers, he says:
“I was pretty adamant going into this process that I didn’t want to just write a book about me (although, I’d probably want to do that eventually… I am a YouTuber, after all). The big difference here is that you shouldn’t need to have an interest in my YouTube channel in order to get something out of the book – there’s so much in there for budding science fans generally.”
Fun Science: A Guide to Life, the Universe and Why Science is so Awesome was announced in February, and as the book gets closer to publication, Charlie explains that he’s both excited and nervous about what its reception will be:
“I feel… exhausted. Nervous. Happy. Quietly optimistic? I’ve hardly shared the text with anyone thus far, so the reactions from my editor, the designer and illustrator Fran Meneses are all I’ve had to go on.
“I’ve only heard good things from them though, which is nice! It’s hard to judge my own work on it, as I’m so close to it now, but seeing Fran and Dave’s spreads coming through has been an absolute treat. They’re really nailing it; it feels really fun and unique, and definitely not the sort of design you’d usually find in a science book.”
Fun Science is set for release on 20 October. Those wishing to pre-order the book can do so via Amazon and Waterstones.
