The EMA was awarded to the artist who gained the most retweets and favourites on Twitter. Troye won by 10,633 favourites and retweets.
After winning the award Troye wrote a message to his fans on Twitter, saying:
“Guys thank you thank you thank you for voting!! While, honestly, I’m not crazy about the idea of ‘who can get the most retweets’ deciding who wins a music award (or the idea of competition in music in general), what this does show is the love and support that I feel from you guys every single day.”
Earlier this month, Troye announced the release of his debut studio album Blue Neighbourhood on 4 December as well as a live date in the UK.
