The YouTuber has been given a leading role in an upcoming production of the musical.
The 1970’s musical, which depicts a series of parables from the Bible, will be running for 10 days at Leamington Spa in Warwickshire from 8-18 July. Following the show’s tradition, Pete Bucknall will be covering two lead roles: John the Baptist and Judas Iscariot.
Speaking with TenEighty, Pete explains: “I start the show as John the Baptist, who gets our little community very excited about the coming of Jesus. Then I move into the character of Judas, who starts off very much a part of the community, but throughout the show becomes very distant and disconnected as well.”
“Judas is a pretty dark and distant guy,” He continues. “He’s someone who has a lot of inward battles with himself and a lot of darkness, which is clear the more the show goes on. I’m loving performing as him because in myself I feel I have much more light! So it’s really interesting to explore the depths of that kind of mindset.”
Directed by Tim Willis, the show will be put on by the Loft Theatre Company, a group of actors Pete say have “helped things run smoothly and have brought a really organic energy and community type vibe to the show”. The play is the first of what Pete hopes will be many appearances on stage.
“There’s definitely a huge part of me that’s hoping that! Performing live has always been a core part of me, whether it was stage productions or playing in bands when I was younger. Right now, for me, it’s about immersing myself in that environment, gaining as much experience and learning as much as I can whilst working with some truly brilliant people – something which I have no intention of stopping!”
