A new IndieGoGo project has been launched to help raise money for Pranking Rachel. TenEighty caught up with Jack Dean about the film.
“The idea initially came from a guy named Jeremy, who works for Navada Group,” says Jack Dean, on how the project started. “He wanted to make a film using just online stars. Straight away he knew he wanted a joker, a pretty guy & a gamer; so contacted my manager, Mazzi Maz’s manager, and Ollie’s (The Master Ov). Of course we all said yes.”
The film is also set to feature Vine star Em Harris, who will compose the soundtrack, and follows a road trip through Rachel, Nevada and the infamous Area 51.
“I play a YouTube prankster who travels to Rachel in Nevada,” Jack tells us. “Rachel is the closest town to Area 51. With the help of Maz & Ov, we try to pull off the biggest YouTube prank ever by convincing the town that aliens are real and amongst them, but it doesn’t quite go according to plan.”
The group are aiming to fund the film through Indiegogo, and need to raise $1.75 million to produce the film. Perks for contributors include exclusive t-shirts, alien shaped USB drives and a Google Hangout with the cast members. $1.75 million is an ambitious target, so we asked Jack what would happen if they didn’t reach it.
“1.75 mil is a crazy amount. And the team know they won’t crowd-fund nowhere near that. But that’s not where the bulk of the funding is coming. The team have meetings with big industry names such as Universal, Sony, Netflix etc, and that’s where the money will come. They have to crowd-fund using our audiences too to keep the premise that the entire film is made up using online stars and their ‘power’, so to speak.”
The official trailer for the project has also been released, and we asked Jack how he was getting on with his co-stars thus far.
“I really get on with them,” he says. “Maz is a really lovely guy. Not at all how I imagined him to be. And Ov is incredibly witty too. They both make me laugh a lot, which makes the long filming days go quicker.”
Finally we asked Jack if this was the start of a glistening acting career. “Let’s hope so,” he laughs.
