Unreliable sources claim that there are at least eight videos uploaded to YouTube every week.
It’s our job to sift through them all and find the best bits for your eyes and ears. The nights are long and the deadlines are harsh, but once again TenEighty has managed it – we’ve got a nan, a video where the comment section has been disabled(!) and someone spectacularly quitting the very platform that keeps us all going. Think you can handle it? Read on at your peril.
Quick question.. – Chris Kendall
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSoGfTpQi6c
*SCREAMS* WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?!
Chris Kendall returns with some deep critique of YouTubers. Using classic devices such as a textured, side-swept fringe, a colourful backdrop suggesting intellectual pursuits outside of the vlogging world and handwritten typography on a piece of paper, it seems like old crabby-boy has something to say about the current state of video-making.
The comment section has been turned off and so has the ability to give the video a thumbs up – how do we respond? How do we show our appreciation? It’s frustrating and clever. Suddenly the interactive element of the creator/viewer relationship is gone and we are rendered silent as we watch, unable to answer his quick question. The power.
But maybe we’re reading too much into this.
NANNY WHISPERS – Thomas Atkin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPTWp0jgYdU
Everything’s better when there’s a grandparent involved, and Thomas Atkin’s nanny does not disappoint.
Going from a somewhat brutal start in which said nanny reveals that Thomas is, in fact, not her favourite grandchild, the video progresses into hysterics and they both battle it out (that sounds far too aggressive, considering there’s an old lady involved. Apologies.)
They’re both pretty cute until there’s a particularly bad lip reading, which results in a whole section about porn. You know, just chatting about porn with your nan. Excruciating times.
Top 10 Things About Being Irish – Seán Connolly
“It’s literally just a spike! What the actual f-” – Seán Connolly’s in-depth analysis of Ireland’s national monument.
But the comedy doesn’t stop there, oh no. Tackling the broad spectrum of what it means to be Irish, Seán covers everything from the weather to the recent accidental legalisation of Class A drugs and Hozier. Jaysus!
Also, there’s quite a stern lesson towards the end for anyone describing St Patrick’s day as St Patty’s Day. Just don’t do it, kids. #PaddyNOTPatty
THE EX – Thomas Gray
Ah, the perils of seeing an ex when you’re least expecting it. What do you do? Keeping walking or stop and make awkward small talk? Try to impress them with your new, exciting life and make it seem like everything’s OK and that you don’t lie awake at night thinking about them?
Thomas Gray did what was necessary to end his and this ex’s relationship, though from what he says it seems like she still has no idea what really went on.
Side note: who can get away with uploading a video in portrait instead of landscape in this era? Thomas can.
Happy Mother’s Day: cerebral palsy and family – Nicola Golding
Nicola Golding is relatively fresh to the vlogging scene, and her enthusiasm always shines through. She’s also very, very lovely.
She spends a lot of her videos talking about living with cerebral palsy and how it affects her life, from finding the right shoes to doing make-up. This week, she made a video about Mother’s Day, explaining how her mom has never faltered in the face of Nicola’s condition (or let her use it as an excuse to not do stuff).
It’s a great video for Nicola’s awesome mum but also a revealing insight into cerebral palsy – btw, physiotherapy obstacle courses around the house sound AMAZING.
OK so there were a few other bits uploaded to YouTube this week…
It goes without saying that being on a PJ Liguori film set must be amazing, as shown in this behind-the-scenes test on his second channel. Smoke, torches and hoods, it’s like all of our childhood dreams have come true.
Is Harry from W2S really quitting YouTube? Will the sidemen ever be the same again? Would you like fries with that? [Spoiler alert: he has since made another video. The Sidemen will remain the same. Super-size fries, please.]
“I am me and you are wrong” wins the award for most appropriate video title this week. Pascale De Bom is tired of people telling her she looks like Jess from New Girl and, as she explains, she has good reasons. Turns out Pascale is an actual human being and not a fictional construct – a human being with feelings! Some people don’t seem to grasp this.
