Nine of the biggest UK YouTubers live on stage in ONE massive show? Oh, go on then…
The Brighton Dome played host to the final leg of Amity Fest on 28 October 2014. TenEighty Magazine went down to see the entire Gleam team in action: Alfie Deyes, Tanya Burr, Niomi Smart, Marcus Butler, Zoe Sugg, Joe Sugg, Jim Chapman, Louise Pentland and Caspar Lee.
It’s hard to explain quite how loud the Brighton crowd were, so as the excited eight took to the stage – complete with a cardboard Joe – we popped in some earplugs that were handed out on the door.
Among the Marcus Butler hoodies and Best Friend robot T-shirts on sale were the sacred, HAND SIGNED Amity Fest posters. All the cool kids have them. We stuck ours up on our toilet door so we can look at it while we… you get the idea.
The show opened with the surprise delivery of a scroll! After some quick thinking from the gang, they hopped into their infamous human pyramid formation and Zoe swiped for the goods.
The whole ordeal did feel a bit panto but collectively reading from the scroll revealed the start of The Amity Games 2014 *fanfare*. The games had begun and we had literally no idea what to expect!
GQ Best-Dressed Man 2015 nominee Jimbob led the first game of the evening. We can’t quite remember the point of the game, the crowd screaming disoriented us and we got distracted by balloons flying everywhere, but it all looked like fun.
Malfie were on fine form in their hometown, championing the first challenge without breaking a sweat. Good work, boys! If you want to see more pictures of Malfie, check out the exclusive Tumblr Photo-Set we made. We ship it.
Calming things down a bit, the teams pulled up stools for what could have been the greatest Westlife tribute act ever. Cheeky Caspar led an exclusive interview with the stars, but for now we’ll consider that healthy competition. Not like we interview YouTubers or anything.
Starring in their own headline show might have looked easy, but planning and rehearsals went into the making of Amity Fest and it showed. However, just in case things went awry, this fella was tucked away at the front of the stage to help things run smoothly. Which they did. Phew.
It wouldn’t be a YouTuber event without some daily vlogging. Throughout the tour the gang captured all the best moments from onstage AND backstage for their viewers. Marcus and Alfie couldn’t help singing along to The Vamps while the stage was set for the next part of the show… so naturally we Vined it.
Amity Fest were also kind enough to welcome two support acts to the stage. The first, Hobbie Stuart, actually went to school with Alfie! Small world. He performed an acoustic Ed Sheeran song and fluffed his words a bit, but we were too distracted by his handsome looks to notice any dodgy lyrics. We’ve posted more pictures of Hobbie and his chiseled jawline in a Tumblr Photo-Set.
Challenge time again as Jim and Caspar took on Marcus and Alfie in sumo-wrestling matches. What do you mean being internet superstars is serious business? If the boys wanted to get all hot and sweaty by dog piling on top of each other we definitely weren’t going to stop them. Check out our Tumblr Photo-Set of the boys for more action.
Taking control of the stage back from the boys, the Gleam girls took their seats for that fun ‘Most Likely To’ game. Each of them looked flawless on stage, if only we knew their secret. We’ve got a feeling it isn’t Nandos, so that might be where we are going wrong. For even more pictures of the Gleam ladies check out this Tumblr Photo-Set.
Helpful Marky Butt Butt gave the ladies a hand with some audience participation in the ‘Most Likely To’ game. To be honest we’re not sure how the fans in the frow (front-row) managed to get any words out as Marcus came by with his microphone. That tank top. *Picks jaw up off floor*
Music time again and Florrie wowed the audience by singing, playing guitar AND her own drums. Now THAT is talent. Florrie is also from Brighton and we’re pretty sure there are good things to come from her in the future.
Florrie gathered the audience for a good sing along to Happy Little Pill by Troye Sivan and we literally got goosebumps. See our Tumblr Photo-Set of Florrie for more pictures from her set.
For the final challenge team red and team blue took part in a javelin challenge (foam javelins obv for health and safety). Niomi proved she might have been an Olympian in a previous life with her sharp aiming, so probably best not to mess with her. The audience went a bit nuts at the prospect of touching the props seconds after their favourite YouTubers, but thankfully nobody was harmed during the Amity Games – not even by a foam javelin.
To close the show DJ Caspar took to the decks and JOE made an appearance! After being ill for the two previous shows, the sneaky Sugg surprised the others by joining them on stage. The crowd went mental, Caspar tore it up on the decks and Tanya cried. Totes emosh.
The rest of the gang rejoined the stage for a boogie and thanked everyone for coming. Marcus and Louise gushed about how much they enjoyed the experience and confirmed this won’t be the last we see of Amity Fest. Tease!
Critics might question the sketchy production values of the show, but we’ll rest on the fact Amity Fest 2014 was a test run that proved successful. While it might not be to everyones taste, the audience in Brighton had a blast and deep down so did we. The Gleam team sure know how to work a crowd.
