The flood gates opened for SitC 2014!
We’ve already delved into Creator Day, so join us for a whistle-stop recap of Summer in the City’s first main day. Prepare for main stage performances, behind-the-scenes peaks and fan madness. You have been warned.
YouTubers and viewers swarmed Alexandra Palace on Saturday morning and boy were they excited! Some hardcore fans queued outside in the cold from as early as 7am, so it’s no wonder there was a mad rush for the doors when the event began!
The very first meet and greet was Gleam superstar Zoe Sugg. Taking selfies with her viewers was a taste of things to come for the whole weekend – YouTubers sure know how to pose for a photo! Looking good, Zoe.
More selfies? Okay fine. Here’s cheeky chap Jamie Cottrell (better known as ChipDaddy) posing with a fan. Awwh, what a nice boy.
One of the key panels of the day was Comedy. James Hill, Dean Dobbs, Jack Howard and Laura Bubble spent most of the time cracking jokes and thinking they were hilaaaarious. To be fair, they were hilarious.
Meanwhile, backstage Malfie were hitting the headlines in a Channel 4 interview. Both Marcus Butler and Alfie Deyes spoke highly about the event and it’s history, how YouTube is changing and their fans. Typical of mainstream media, Channel 4 cut all that out of the news piece and included a short clip of the pair giggling. Classic.
Back out in one of the panel rooms, Niki and Sammy Albon took to the hot-seats for a grilling on Collaborations. The whole panel was chaired by Doug Armstrong and everybody had a jolly good time.
Daniel Dobbs really tore things up on the main stage, look at him go. OK, we promised Daniel we’d stop saying how cute and little he is, but… seriously… look, just LOOK!
Y’kno that song by Kelis? The one that goes “my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard,”? Yeah, well instead of milkshake Ja Son uses candy-floss hair, and clearly it works.
Honestly, we’re not sure what’s going on here or why one of the security is blowing up a beach ball. But he is. And it happened. And we wanted to share it with you.
Tom Law looking pensive during his performance on the main stage. Could you imagine being the person caught in that gaze? Just one dreamy glance and your whole world changes.
Gary C kicking ass in the LGBTQ+ panel. We said that because we thought it’d be funny. It wasn’t. What’s actually happening here is Gary is giving advice to the many LGBTQ+ people out there in the [YouTube] world. How he mothers us. How he cares. What a babe.
More Malfie action with Marcus and Alfie, this time over at the signing tables. Look how happy this lovely lady is to meet them. D’awwwh.
Wait, what? Is that Louise Pentland vlogging from the TenEighty stand at Summer in the City? Yes it is. Louise very kindly came over and signed several copies of our first ever physical mag. I’m sorry to break it to you lot, but they all sold out pretty quick after this moment. Thanks for all your support Louise!
Dave Giles chaired the Musicians on YouTube panel. Here’s him mid response with Helen Anderson, Lancifer, Tessa Violet and BriBry all looking on.
All they wanted was a break, so Jack Howard and Dean Dobbs popped backstage, and on their way to the green room they got stopped by this pesky journalist. How dare other journalists exist. How dare they. We are the only journalist Jack and Dean care about, right boys? RIGHT?
Poor Luke Yohn. Stuck behind a merch stand selling stuff for Benjamin Cook and the WOTO boys. When will Luke Yohn’s fun begin? When will he be allowed to fly and take YouTube by storm? Silly Luke Yohn, none for you Luke Yohn.
This room was the secret media hang out. Where the media hung out and waited for YouTubers to drop by. They basically never did. And the rest of the media just stayed here. Waiting. Not exploring the event. Not covering it. They just waited here. *shakes head disapprovingly*
Tim H took the stage for his last appearance here in the UK. Well, we don’t know that for sure, but y’kno he’s leaving us for the US. He got funded by Ron Howard or something. And got into that fancy film school or something. How dare he leave us. HOW DARE HE. (*sobs quietly in a corner*)
Miraduel. That is all. No explanations.
Tyler Oakley meeting fans at the signing lines. I don’t know how she’s done it, but this very pretty lady has upstagged Tyler in joyful pose. Well done you pretty lady!
Did you accidentally line-up in the Oli White meet and greet line instead of the Dan and Phil line? Don’t worry, you can cheer yourself up at the drawing tables, where you can write a formal complaint in various Crayolas or draw a demonic eye that’ll hopefully summon the queue-jump overlord.
Drawing didn’t cheer you up? Why not have a dance on one of the many Playstation screens hanging about. See, these girls did it, and they’ve already forgotten the awful mistake they made earlier by joining the wrong signing queue.
Helen Anderson and her band Box of Light hit the main stage around 5PM, and they were outstanding. Literally, we were blown away. And look at her here, being seductive and moody. Gah, she makes us gush.
And the YouTube silver award goes to: Doug Armstrong! Woooooo “Hey there!”
And another YouTube silver award goes to: Cherry Wallis! “HIYYYAAAAAHHHH!!!!!”
In protest of Cherry Wallis winning a YouTube award, Lancifer burned a ukelele. Silly Lancifer, Cherry doesn’t play a ukelele. All you’ve done here is upset Dodie Clark!
Signings were STILL taking place at this point (no honestly, some of them were going on for up to 3 hours.) Here are Jonathan and Anna Saccone-Joly happy to meet fans. Doesn’t look like Emilia is too pleased though… maybe that fan smells or something?
Tyler Oakley hit the main stage for a quick Q&SLAYYY and he brought along Benjamin Cook too. Doesn’t Tyler look adorable here?
You can see it in his eyes, can’t you? Ben is saying “come on Tyler, giv uz a kizz!” Don’t worry kids, Tyler declined. Surely this means Troyler is real?
Dan Howell and Phil Lester played the whiteboard game with PJ Liguori hosting. In this one PJ is about to ask Phil which member of One Direction he’d make out with. Just kidding, just kidding, but… who do you reckon it’d be? Zayn. It’d totally be Zayn, right Phil?
Tessa Violet graced the Summer in the City main stage, accompanied by Rusty Clanton. She’s come so far as a musician since her performance last year and it truly was a treat to hear her sultry voice fill up Alexandra Palace again.
Guess what? Patty Walters meet and greet line was so long they had to cut it off. Then he went out and met MORE fans. Look how long that line is? We don’t know how anyone could do it.
Suddenly glow sticks and 3D glasses were thrown out onto the crowd. Suddenly electronic and 8-bit beats filled up the venue. Suddenly some man started wailing songs about different animals like cats, badgers and narwhals. Oh, Jonti Picking AKA Mr Weebl. There’s only one thing that could make this even stranger…
That.
And with a zap of a finger, Mrs. Johnson (who we suspect is Tom Ridgewell in a dress with a horse head mask on) shut down Saturday at Summer in the City. The photographer who took this photo actually had to be rushed to A&E after taking this photo. He kept mumbling something along the lines of, “she looked right at me.” Don’t worry kids, he was fine the next day. Well, apart from the nervous twitch.
