It continues to amaze us how much can happen in 7 days. Let’s take a look back at the week where Alex Day had his book scrapped, Jack and Dean made it onto Radio 1 and TenEighty were announced as judges for Raindance Web Fest. We’ve searched high and low for some of the best videos…
DAN BULL & DAVE BROWN – VIOLENT BIBLE RAP
Dan Bull and Dave Brown from Boyinaband have collaborated for an unconventional ‘horrorcore rap’ song. And if you think the genre is obscure, wait until you hear the lyrics. The duo have taken aggressive quotes from the bible for the basis of the song and we think it’s bloody hilarious.
The song is very well produced and is accompanied with a spooky video of them being mysterious and gothic in a church, graveyard and forrest. Whether they meant to or not, they’ve highlighted how morbid and horrific religion can be, especially when you take passages from a doctrine out of context and throw a beat underneath it.
Bizarrely, some people in the comment section have interpreted the song as a profession of their faith, completely missing the humour behind it. One things for sure, they clearly spent a lot of money on candles and skulls.
RYANDOESVIDEOS – FLASHBACK
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DzKTMF63XA
New YouTuber RyanDoesVideos did something a bit different from conventional vlogs this week, producing his first short film. Flashback follows a character retracing childhood memories as he leaves a message on his brothers answer phone. It features picturesque shots of fields, lakes and a rusty barn as he walks through the scenery.
We’re left to interpret what he’s feeling through his body language and voice over as we never see his face – an interesting stylistic choice. The ending is a bit abrupt and maybe needed some more development, but overall we like the concept and applaud Ryan’s ambition.
It’s always great to see YouTubers trying new things and challenging themselves, and hopefully this is the first step towards bigger and bolder projects for him.
ADAM WAITHE – GOOD ACTING, BAD SCRIPT
Brazen and boisterous, Adam Waithe is one of the lads of the UK YouTube Community. After all, he does affectionately call himself ‘Lord Dickhead’ and makes jokes about his sweaty balls. But don’t write him off for it, because he’s actually quite a funny guy.
In Good Acting, Bad Script he takes a popular Vine hashtag and develops them into several scenes which feature – you guessed it – good acting and bad scripts. Well, at least he tries to act anyway. He takes on romance, drama, action, suspense and much much more. To be honest, we’re disappointed he didn’t try a musical scene!
There are some risquè jokes but he delivers them knowingly and very much in a self-parodical way, and sometimes they are revealed to simply be the set up to a pun you didn’t see coming. The whole thing doesn’t take itself too seriously – he’s making fun of himself as much as he is actors or scripts – and thats what’s so on-point about it.
AMELIA MANDEVILLE – WHY ARE YOU SO SKINNY?
Usually vlogging with her sister, this week Amelia Mandeville went solo to address an issue that has affected her personally. She discusses her own body image problems, explaining how day-to-day comments from people in have made her conscious of how skinny she is. Amelia doesn’t suffer from an eating disorder, explaining that she has a high metabolism, but people tend to assume she does or comment on her weight.
Her conclusion is that everyone is built differently and that we should all learn to love ourselves as we are and stop judging others based on appearances. For such a serious topic, Amelia handles it in a charming and sincere way. It’s refreshing to see a female YouTuber tackling an issue that affects most females throughout their lives.
We salute Amelia for opening it up because we believe it’s an important discussion that should take place. Hopefully others YouTubers will take it on too.
WILL DARBYSHIRE – HAPPY PLACE
Returning for the twelfth instalment of his vlog series, Will Darbyshire takes to his happy place. Despite largely being branded as a tourist trap, Will helps us see the Natural History Museum from a whole new angle.
True to form this beautifully shot video carries a simple message and makes us like Will even more than we did already. It also got us thinking about our happy place. Nandos? Our bed? Tumblr?
GIVE ME JUST A LIL’ BIT MORE…
If you like the idea of seeing KSI fall over lots and practically drown in mud then you should check out his Tough Mudder video. Rather him than us, tbh.
Marcus Butler sent fandoms into meltdown when he collobarated with two of the US’s biggest heartthrob vloggers in just one week. First he played the Internet Slang game with Connor Franta. Then he stripped down and shared a shower with Joey Graceffa. Well y’know, it’s nice to see two guys comfortable being wet and naked around other men without it being awkward. Maybe it’s not the first time…
Doug returned to his Life Hacks series with some special tips for summer, one of which is how to pull of your t-shirt in one swift move. We tried it out for ourselves and punched a bulb out of the ceiling light – so we’ll probably just leave it to Doug.
Also, did you know the World Cup started this week? No, us neither. Jack Dean did, however, and has launched a series of videos dedicated to making match predictions on his second channel, and he wants y’all to join in! The thing is, there are so many videos that we’re just going to link to the channel and hope you guys can make sense of it. That’s all for this week!
