Advertising
We use Google AdSense to generate revenue from visits to our website. Google will display ads that it believes are relevant to you based on your browsing history, and we will earn a small amount of money from any interactions you have with them.
Because AdSense places cookies on your device, you’ll be asked to opt in to our use of it when you visit TenEighty from a new browser or device. If you change your mind at any time, you can edit your settings here.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to collect data about (among other things) the pages you view, the device you use to access the site, roughly where you are visiting from, and, if you didn’t come to us directly, the website that linked you to us or the search terms you used to find us. This helps us learn a bit about who our readers are, what TenEighty content they are interested in, and how they consume it. We have chosen to use the IP Anonymization option so that your IP address and specific location are never recorded. The data collected by Google Analytics is retained indefinitely, but none of it is personally identifiable, and it is not made available to any third parties.
It also lets us know how many people are using the site at any given moment, which allows us to identify and deal with traffic spikes. These have caused problems with the stability of the site in the past, so Analytics is necessary for us to keep the site online.
Embedded external content
TenEighty posts may include embedded content from other websites including (but not limited to) YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram. Embedded content from other websites often behaves in exactly the same way as if you have visited the other website.
These other websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account with them and are logged in to it.
Contact forms
If you choose to send us a message via our on-site Contact form, you will be asked to enter your name so that we know who you are, and your email address so that we can respond. The data submitted is sent to TenEighty’s co-editors (Teoh Lander-Boyce and AJ Brinnand) and editorial coordinator (Lucy Cooksley) who may store it indefinitely at their discretion, or pass it on to other relevant members of the TenEighty team, in dealing with your inquiry. You will be asked explicitly for your consent before you submit the form.
Additionally, members of our team may create external Google Forms for discrete purposes, and publicise them on the site or our social media accounts. For example, our co-editors will occasionally open applications for new writers; forms for this purpose will require personal information including contact details which may be retained for up to three months, will be used to assess applicants’ suitability and respond to those who are successful, and may also be shared with other team members involved in the subsequent training process. Previous editors of the Spotlight section have invited submissions from smaller YouTubers wishing to be featured therein; these forms have required the submitter’s name, YouTube channel, and location to allow the editor to find their content and assess whether it meets TenEighty’s remit (as a site that focuses primarily on UK YouTubers), and the information was retained indefinitely to allow the editor to check in on submitted channels regularly. Because external forms like these are created and managed independently of the main site by the individual team members in question, it isn’t possible to cover every eventuality here, so please consult the forms themselves – they should explain what data is being collected and how it will be used.
Registered users
There are additional conditions that apply only to registered users (i.e. members of the TenEighty team who have an account that allows them to access the content management system, sometimes called “the CMS” or “the backend”); those can be found here.
