Ryan’s World the Movie: Titan Universe Adventure is the first theatrical release about an online creator since 2010’s Fred: The Movie.
Starring all members of the Kaji family – Ryan, Kate, Emma, Loann and Shion – and featuring cameos from Hungry FAM, K-City, and Toys and Colors, Ryan’s World the Movie centers around Ryan’s mission to save his younger sisters in the comic book Titan Universe.
TenEighty was recently able to speak to Ryan and his parents about the film and the work that went into making it a reality.
“We’ve done YouTube videos for many years – close to 10 years,” Shion said. “We’ve launched nine different YouTube channels, and then partnered with the pocket.watch team. We produced a TV series, and we also launched our own toy brand.
“We thought about what would be the next big challenge for Ryan,” he continued. “He’s turning 13 years old, [a] teenager. We want to give him a new challenge and thought the movie would be perfect. So, three years ago, we started thinking about the screenplay and movie concept.”
From there, the project grew to include more than just Ryan, with Emma and Kate becoming characters.
“It was really fun to see my sisters acting,” Ryan told TenEighty. “[It’s] just so fun.”
Loann added, “For Emma and Kate to do it, we were kind of nervous going into it, because we weren’t sure what to expect. But I could see them even day by day, as they were filming, they progressively became more confident. They were getting into character more, they really blossomed and grew.
“Just to see how confident they are coming out of it, it was just very impressive to see within a very short period of time, too.”
The directorial debut of Albie Hecht (formerly with Nickelodeon and Spike TV), Ryan’s World the Movie was officially announced in September 2023, at which point it was revealed Rose Frankel of pocket.watch would be writing the screenplay.
The film made its worldwide debut at the Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) in the United States on April 6, 2024, and debuted in 1,285 North American and 85 UK theaters this month, on August 16. Thus far, it’s grossed $555,656 at the global box office.
According to Ryan’s parents, the hope is Ryan’s World the Movie will help open the door for other creators looking to make their big-screen debuts.
“There’s no movie like this before, where it’s an influencer-based movie, but, hopefully, we all can work together with different influencers, and maybe [they] can launch movies like this,” Shion said.
Loann added, “We kind of felt a little pressure to do well. Not only for us, but if it really does – like, if we do well in this, it does really create a pathway for other people.”
To close out our interview, TenEighty asked Ryan if there’s anything else he’d like to pursue, given he’s conquered YouTube, television and, now, film.
“I think when I grow up, I want to be an animator, because I think it’s really fun, just, like, drawing,” he responded.
