The news comes less than a week after Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian resigned from the company’s board.
Reddit has announced that Twitch Co-Founder and Y Combinator CEO Michael Seibel has been appointed as a director to its executive board.
The news of the appointment comes after Alexis Ohanian, Reddit’s Co-Founder, announced on 5 June that he would be exiting the board. Upon leaving, he released a statement, asking the company to replace him with a Black candidate, a request Reddit agreed to.
Seibel is best known for co-founding justin.tv – which would later become known as Twitch – and working with the site from 2007 to 2011. He later joined Y Combinator in 2013, before becoming the company’s CEO in 2016.
Under his leadership, Y Combinator has advised and funded more than 1,800 startups. In 2012, it was acquired by software firm, Autodesk.
In a statement provided to Reddit, Seibel wrote:
“I want to thank Steve, Alexis, and the entire Reddit Board for this opportunity. I’ve known Steve and Alexis since 2007 and have been a Reddit user ever since. Over this period of time I’ve watched Reddit become part of the core fabric of the internet and I’m excited to help provide advice and guidance as Reddit continues to grow and tackle the challenges of bringing community and belonging to a broader audience.”
Upon his appointment to the executive board, Seibel will acquire an equity stake in Reddit.
