Mais Violet has released her new single, titled You Are.
The musician and YouTuber first informed fans of the song’s pending releasing toward the end of May, sharing an announcement on Twitter.

Speaking with TenEighty about the release, Mais shares that You Are was first written when she was quite a bit younger and that it details the feelings she experienced about her first love: “It was written about the first person I had a lot of feelings for, on one of the first nights I’d ever been drinking with friends, and I just remember scrambling to get the lyrics for this down.”
Given the song is a couple of years old, Mais shares that it features her “normal writing style of detailed lyrics and simple melodies”. In order to update it, she used the skills she’s learned over the course of her career, and she teamed up with her Harsh Light bandmate, Micky, to help record it in the home they share in Brighton.
You Are is Mais’ first release since her 2018 EP, Make A Little Laughter, and is her third official musical release. When asked how the track differs from those found on Make A little Laughter, she cites what she hopes fans will recognise as improvement, production-wise:
“It’s been a while since I’ve released music, and with that time I hope has come improvement. I feel that [the] production of my previous music leaves more to be desired.
“Since putting MALL out, I have studied music production for a year, and am lucky to have lovely and talented friends to help me out,” she continues. “For that reason, I hope this song sounds a lot more clear and professional to my listeners.”
As it’s her first release in approximately a year and a half, Mais is excited for fans to hear it. She shares that she’s proud of the song and is looking forward to hearing everyone’s feedback, whether that be praise or criticism.
As for what fans can expect?
“They can expect to hear a mellow and calm track that talks about young love and the sweet ‘rose-tinted’ effect that that gives,” she says. “My dad described it as ‘the song you’d put on at the end of the night when the sun’s coming out’.”
