“People have been using lock down to glow up.”
Kicking off the video, Becky James says that she was “falling apart” due to the current lockdown, so what better way to perk yourself up than to have an intense makeover at the hands of her fellow British YouTubers – via Photoshop, of course! (Have to keep following those social distancing guidelines.) She forwarded them some captivating “bambinobecky-style” photos and waited for the magic to begin.
First up was Jack Dean, who responded in true JaackMaate style. Of course, he replaced Becky’s Disarrano with a Zoella Advent Calendar, scattering £50 notes in a trail to lead to a Photoshopped Jack, peeking out from behind a bush. This allusion to a classic Jack scandal deemed a spot in Becky’s “hot” pile.
Next up were Zac Alsop and Jamie Rawsthorne. Starting with a photo of Becky holding her YouTube 100,000 subscriber plaque, Zac and Jay put their own spin on things. A Bee Movie-edited version of Becky was presented, equipped with “toilet roll dumbbells”, Barry Bee Benson and some questionable Photoshop skills on Becky herself. “I look like a Wotsit,” Becky states, awarding the image a place in the “hot” pile.
“Oh God, it’s awful,” is how Becky explained Kate Elisabeth‘s submission. Kate came through with a Photoshopped version of one of Becky’s mirror selfies, giving her that “Kim K body” by lightening her hair colour, enlarging her eyes and morphing Becky’s waist. Unfortunately, Kate’s Photoshopping skills did not make the cut, landing a space in the “not” pile.
Talia Mar, described by Becky as “a woman who knows her angles”, Photoshopped her riding a sheep, with a background of the Welsh countryside. “I thought, ‘What is Becky?’ and Becky is Welsh,” Talia said, an explanation that landed her in the “hot seat”.
“Hoping for the best, expecting the worst” seemed to be a common theme throughout the video, especially for Kiera Bridget‘s Photoshop work. “You are a Beverly Hills mother of six,” states Kiera, while presenting a highly morphed version of a classic Becky selfie. “100% hot!”
Ciarán Carlin pulled through with a simplistic, yet effective piece of “art”. Replacing Becky entirely with a pint of beer, he clearly “turned her into what she loves the most” just by “removing her face entirely”. Ciarán was awarded a place in the “hot” pile!
Gee Nelson followed with a very SpongeBob SquarePants-themed photoshop. At first, Gee explained that she’d tried to make Becky into herself, but failed to do so. In the end, she transformed her into Patrick Star, achieving a “hot” rating.
“If you opened my brain and did a brain scan, this is what you would see,” followed Max Fosh’s attempt at Photoshop. The image included Tom Jones, beer and “many Beckys” in the background trees. He transformed Becky herself into a Smurf, landing him a spot in the “not hot” pile.
Next up, Lucia Keskin outdid herself by creating a very Wicked scene. Lucia combined Becky with Elphaba from the hit musical, even including a tornado, a broomstick and a witch’s hat. “I don’t think art needs an explanation,” she states, achieving a “hot” rating.
“Oh my Christ, we only have one left!” Finally, Alex Elmslie made Becky “thick, to match her intellect” through Photoshop editing. Morphing Becky to look like a “travesty” (as described by Becky herself), this final image did not quite make the cut!
Becky ends the video by asking her viewers to vote for the winner of the challenge by commenting on her Instagram or on the video itself. Which picture do you think is “hot or not”? Be sure to let Becky (and us) know!
