Those participating in the challenge have received backlash.
TikTok has come under fire for allowing users to participate in what’s known as the ‘Autism Challenge’, where people are seen dancing to a parody of the Black Eyed Peas song, Let’s Get It Started, while making hand gestures and facial movements that appear to mock those with disabilities.
Many of the videos from those participating in the challenge have since been deleted. However, it’s unknown if the users themselves removed them or if it was at the hands of TikTok itself.
Those who click on the song used are being directed to videos of those condemning the challenge and those who have participated in it.
Numerous online creators have commented on the challenge, including Philip DeFranco, who covered it on a recent episode of his news show, The Philip DeFranco Show.
Blogger Kate Swenson of Finding Cooper’s Voice has also uploaded a video, where she shared her own opinions on the challenge. In it, she said:
“What is wrong with you? I’m asking. I’m hoping you see my video and you can respond to me, and tell me what is wrong with you. Do you need help? Do you need a hug? Do you need love? Do you need support? Are you not getting what you need from your parents? What is it, because anyone that would do that is so low and so messed up… I’m flabbergasted.”
I recently found out about a new challenge on TikTok. It's entire purpose is to make fun of those with disabilities, specifically with autism. In one, a mother is doing 'the dance' with her own kid. Making fun of sounds and hand gestures. To 'that' mom, I have a message for you. I am shocked. I am sickened. And I am embarassed for you.TikTok these videos need to be removed. I'm pretty sure humiliating a group of people goes against your 'standards.'
