The lens is the latest feature Snapchat is utilising to raise awareness about COVID-19.
The lens will use the app’s image recognition software to help bring awareness to and raise money for the World Health Organization‘s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund.
According to the mobile app, the new feature will be an “augmented reality donation experience” that will be triggered upon users scanning currency from their country:
“Through the Snapchat camera, Snapchatters can scan 23 international currency notes across 33 countries, bringing up an AR visualization of how donations support the World Health Organization’s immediate response efforts to track the spread of COVID-19, ensure patients get the care they need, and provide frontline workers with critical supplies. Snapchatters can then easily donate, and encourage friends to do the same by sending Snaps of the experience.”
The lens will utilise up-to-date information sourced from the World Health Organization, and is among a host of lenses that have been released to ensure users stay safe during the current pandemic.
Along with the release of the new lens, Snapchat also announced that media companies using its Discover platform to cover COVID-19 will be able to offer users the option to swipe up and donate directly from their content.
According to Snapchat, as of the end of March 2020, 445 Discover Stories have been produced about COVID-19, while over 68 million users have viewed related content.
