The singer described her two songs in three words; a ‘quirky, sad bop’ for Money, and an ‘Early twenties anthem’ for 23.
Leadley discussed her inspiration for Money, saying “I’ve never been a materialistic person, I’ve never been interested in designer bags or clothes. I think my ideal life is just getting to do a job I love and having time to spend with the people I love – so many of us get caught up in our jobs that we forget our life is happening now. That’s what the songs about.”
“23 was written about the increasing anxiety I’d had this year. A lot of the song was written in freestyle on the microphone – we just pieced it all together”. She continued, saying how “the weird thing about turning 23 is you’re definitely not a kid anymore – but no one really prepares you for it”
“I started getting anxiety about potentially making it as an artist, all the opportunities I messed up when I was younger and ignorant – was I behind? I found out I had ADHD a few months after writing this which cleared up a lot about how my brain functions – but the point still stands. Early twenties are rough, we gotta be nicer to each other and to ourselves.” she explains.
Leadley had great reception from fans at the concerts, regarding Money and 23. “I feel like everyone loves performing their latest material because it’s fresh – the majority don’t know any of your songs so you get to find out which one’s are bopping for real. You know everyone’s waiting for the main act so you just wanna make that waiting time as enjoyable as possible, the reaction has been super unexpected but I’m so grateful to Tessa’s audience for embracing me with open arms. It really made the whole touring experience very special and I will never forget how it made me feel.”
The singer also talked about producing her own music, stating “I love being there for the production aspect, we do a lot in the initial writing session together but there’s a certain magic that Elyar has added with the production of these latest singles that really just encapsulates everything I’m feeling. The lucky thing about working with someone that knows you so well is we rarely disagree on something.”
Leadley’s latest single Chic was released 9 August 2019. You can listen to her latest EP on Spotify, that features her other songs Never Knew Love and Life of the Party.
