Prepare your ears for some great tunes.
Over the years, dodie has given us songs to fit so many moods. Whether we’re feeling nostalgic about our past, want to get hyped up for an upcoming celebration, or simply wish to listen to something while we’re decompressing from the day we’ve just had, there’s a dodie song for everything, which is why we thought we’d try and come up with a list of some of our all-time favourites. With so much music to choose from, narrowing our choices down was no simple task, but we think we did a pretty good job.
Here are just 10 of our favourite dodie songs.
Party Tattoos
We’ve all experienced this song, especially in our late teens and early twenties. Party Tattoos somehow hits us right in the nostalgia, as well as the present, in one fell swoop, leaving behind joy and hope, and making us appreciate the times we’re currently having with friends.
Burned Out
If you’ve ever experienced burnout, raise your hand. If you’re being honest with both us and yourself, then you probably did just as we instructed. Burnout is something everyone has experienced at one point in their lives, and whilst dodie’s experiences with it aren’t universal, Burned Out is certainly a song we can all relate to on some level.
I’ve Been Busy
We don’t care if you don’t think this song counts because we’ve decided it does. Simple and funny, it’s an update video in song form that manages to get stuck in your head, whether you want it to or not. We may not have been to a premiere in Germany, but we’ve all been overworked to the point of a meltdown before, and the somewhat frantic end of this song is a place most of us have been.
Guiltless
Her most recently released song, Guiltless, is a track about carrying other people’s guilt around whilst they appear completely free of such emotion. Like so many of dodie’s songs, it hits us in the chest, making us feel unapologetic, while also telling us to confront the harm and trauma others have caused.
In fact, we loved the song and its accompanying music video so much that we dedicated an entire Video Spotlight to it!
Would You Be So Kind?
dodie opens this song admitting that how she feels about it changed from the time she wrote it to us hearing it now. A song about unrequited love and the hope you feel when you first fall in love with someone, its lyrics feel familiar, regardless of how old the listener is. Whether you’re currently in love or have been in the past, Would You Be So Kind? lets all of those feelings bubble to the surface.
When
The ultimate nostalgia tear jerker.
It’s very easy to look back and wonder if life will ever be how you perceived it back when you were younger and, as such, it’s so easy to get stuck in a rut. A truly beautiful song about growing up and looking back when you should be looking forwards, it isn’t hard to see why When is on this list.
One For The Road
So you’ve just experienced a breakup, a bad one. You want to be as far away from that person and the bitter heartbreak as possible, so what should you listen to? One For The Road, of course! It’s a song that, once you’ve made it past the initial upset, acknowledges everything you have and how much better off you are. If that isn’t the sign of good lyrical writing, we don’t know what is!
Absolutely Smitten
dodie didn’t officially release this track until 2016, but we remember a very young version of her playing it for the first time in her bedroom, with just her ukulele in hand. An upbeat and happy song about love at first sight, it’s just what you need to perk yourself up after a long day!
Secret for the Mad
A sad melody with an ultimately uplifting message. Secret for the Mad is a track that strikes a chord with anyone who has or is currently suffering from mental health issues, and offers up a glimpse of hope in times of darkness.
Monster
Raise your hand if you’ve enjoyed watching dodie’s break into the mainstream after Monster‘s released. We know we have. A song about love gone sour, it’s no surprise that it’s on our list. Endlessly catchy, with lyrics that reflect how dating can go so wrong, of course this is one of our favourite dodie songs.
Also, can we talk about the numerous YouTuber cameos in the music video?
So there you have it…
Our 10 favourite dodie songs! Like we said earlier, it was no easy feat narrowing down this list to just 10 tracks, but we think we were able to encompass all that dodie and her music are about. Is there a song you feel we missed? Be sure to send us a tweet to @TenEightyUK and let us know! We’ll have a dodie listening party!
