Let’s celebrate Pride!
A celebration of the LGBTQ+ community and a way of raising awareness about what still has to be overcome, Pride Month is a time where everyone can be themselves and celebrate who they are. It’s an important and symbolic time, and one we look forward to each and every year. We wrote our first Pride Month-related Five of the Best in 2017 and loved it so much we decided to do the same in 2018. Now, we’re continuing the tradition with a list of videos from creators who not only see YouTube as a place where they can express who they are, but who themselves have created safe spaces for their viewers.
To recap this year’s Pride Month, we’ve scoured YouTube and chosen some of our favourite LGBTQ+ videos. From coming out videos to an open letter to the site’s LGBTQ+ community, we’ve compiled quite a list, so let’s get reading our Five of the Best: Pride Month 2019!
why i’m proud to be me | celestial
We first spotlighted this video from Celeste Madden in a recent Weekly Round-Up, but we felt we needed to discuss it in much more detail, hence why we’ve chosen it to kick off this week’s article!
In this video, Celeste shares six reasons as to why she’s happy to be bisexual. From sharing how proud and happy she is about being bisexual, to the people she’s met as a result of coming out, it’s a list many can relate to. As well, we’re glad Celeste isn’t ashamed of her sexuality and hasn’t allowed her past to affect how she currently feels about herself. No one should ever have to feel bad about how they identify, and it’s a message we’re glad she’s sharing with her audience!
To YouTube With Gay Love | Calum McSwiggan
We’re not going to lie, this video from Calum McSwiggan left us with quite a few tears in our eyes and you’ll understand why after you’ve given it a watch for yourselves.
In celebration of Pride Month, Calum shared this love letter to YouTube and the LGBTQ+ creators he’s met as a result of his channel. It not only features his own thoughts, but those of others within the community, including Roly West, Doug Armstrong and Olly Pike. It’s a letter that really shows how much of a vital source YouTube is for those exploring their sexuality, are unsure of how they identify and/or are simply looking for a community where they feel accepted, and it’s left us feeling quite emotional.
DIYs For PRIDE Month! | HeyAmyJane
All you crafties get ready because Amy Jane Pocock is here with a whole host of Pride-related DIY projects!
While we might not be the most talented bunch when it comes to art, we jumped at the chance to get our creative juices flowing with this video. Whether you’re of the belief you should have a wreath on your door for every occasion or want some Pride-themed garland hanging around your room, Amy offers up plenty of projects to ensure our Pride celebrations happen all year round!
Coming Out To You | AmazingPhil
One type of video we often see during June each year are coming out videos. Given the amount of events, resources and celebrations occurring during the month, as well as its embracing nature, it’s a great time to come out, and that’s exactly what Phil Lester did recently.
In the latest video uploaded to his channel, Phil came out as gay to his viewers. Throughout, he shares his experiences growing up and what it’s been like for him coming out to those in his life, in the hopes his story will help those watching. (It’s all about representation!) He then ends the video by offering advice to his viewers and letting them know that it’s not on them if someone doesn’t accept them because of their sexuality or how they identify. Instead, he advocates they surround themselves with people who do!
CELEBRATING DISNEY MAGICAL PRIDE WITH MY BOYFRIEND! #ad | TheRealAlexBertie
We all know Pride is an amazing experience, but Pride at Disneyland Paris? That’s literally the dream!
We get to watch as Alex Bertie and boyfriend Nate visit the most magical place on earth to not only take in all it has to offer, but to be present during its Pride parade! Honestly, seeing how happy these two are in this video left us with huge smiles on our faces, and we’re glad they had such a good time. The parade looked like a magical time – we wish we could have been there to experience it firsthand! Also, can we talk about how awesome the rainbow Mickey Mouse heads are?
So there you have it…
Our Five of the Best: Pride Month 2019! We hope you were able to take in the events that happened throughout the month, and, remember, Pride doesn’t just happen in June. It never stops, so make sure to celebrate it all year long!
