“Enough people had been asking me ‘would you ever play live?’ that eventually that added up and I thought it would be nice to give back something to the humans that have listened to my music.”
As if we weren’t already listening to every Tom Rosenthal song on repeat, there’s now the chance to hear him live! Tom performed his first live shows in March and April 2019 accompanied by cellist Maddie Ashman and guitarist Jon Willoughby. This video features the band discussing the shows with footage from the tour so far and cuts it together in a way that is just as stunning as any Tom Rosenthal music video. Tom has an incomparable voice, so you can certainly expect an experience to match.
Luckily for those who couldn’t come to the first shows, he’s now embarking on a tour across Europe with shows in Germany, Czech Republic, Scotland, and more! The London venue was in the ultra-beautiful Union Church and you can expect similarly ambient vibes from the rest of the tour, which includes De Roma in Belgium.
The show is mainly musical but includes a new segment called FunFacts in which Tom shares random facts about the band, who are just as oblivious as the audience to what these facts might be. “My fun fact was about me liking eggs,” Maddie says, “which came because I asked for an A on the piano and he thought I asked for an egg.” Naturally, it became an instant meme.
Tom has tried to include as many of his popular songs as possible, but also considered which would be enjoyable to perform live. “It’s a nice mix of the popular ones combined with funny ones combined with ones that I personally really like and want to show off in a different context,” he explains. So as an audience member, you can expect to cry, laugh and cry again. We were promised an emotional rollercoaster, and boy did Tom deliver.
