Who knew science could be this much fun?
Trick question: Charlie McDonnell did! Over the past few years, he’s been sharing with us numerous brilliant videos that delve into all area of science in fun and engaging ways. A series spanning 28 videos and counting, Fun Science has taught us numerous things, such as why our taste buds change over time, why music has an affect on our mood, how time works and much more! It’s like we’re sitting in science class, except we’re not stuck in a stuffy lab and the material we’re learning is actually interesting.
Since we love Fun Science so much, we thought we’d share with you a few of our all-time favourite moments. We had a lot of material to sift through, but we feel we’ve come up with a pretty good list. Here they are, our five favourite Fun Science moments!
The cats vs. dogs quiz show
Which is better, cats or dogs? Sure, some of you would say dogs, given how affectionate and loving they are. Not to mention the nose boops they give. However, we also know there are a number of you who would choose cats, as there’s nothing better than cuddling with your purring feline after a long day. But which one is actually better? Well, we’ve finally got the answer from science itself!
We would dispute the implications that dogs are fundamentally better than cats, but this quiz show format, filled with fun facts about how much our furry friends improve our lives, remains a firm favourite.
When we found out how much a hug can help us
Everybody loves a hug and it turns out they’re pretty good for us too! Not only can they improve our performance, but they even work to improve our immune systems by reducing the amount of stress we feel. Thanks for everything, oxytocin!
Now, who wants a hug?
When the Fun Science book was released

Hands up, who bought a copy of Fun Science: A Guide To Life, The Universe And Why Science Is So Awesome when it was released back in 2016? If the numerous Fun Science videos weren’t enough, there’s a whole book dedicated to the series! It’s sold across the world, so you have no excuse to not have it on your bookshelf, ready to take out whenever your science-loving friends come around.
(Psst… If you have yet to get your hands on a copy, you can purchase one on Amazon.)
When we got to watch some cool experiments
You’re lying if you say your favourite part of science lessons in school wasn’t the experiments. Seriously, what could be more fun than seeing three super simple experiments we can frequently re-watch for our amusement? Nothing, that’s what! The bell in the bell jar showed us how sound can’t travel in a vacuum; the vanishing rod disappeared right before our eyes thanks to refraction; and the annoying noise makes some pretty patterns that get more intricate with the frequency of the sound produced.
We also can’t forget to mention the brief cameo from the always adorable Gideon. Everybody loves that cat.
The intro song (and dance)
Fun Science, Fun Science, Fun Science is the science of fun, yeah.
There is honestly nothing better than listening to the little ukulele jingle at the beginning of each Fun Science video. We more often than not find ourselves dancing along with Charlie while it’s playing, and it always manages to put us in the mood to learn something scientific!
Words by Bob Leak and Clare Fitzgerald.
So there you have it…
Our five favourite Fun Science moments! We never knew we could actually get excited to learn anything science-related, but here we are, constantly refreshing our sub boxes, hoping a new video from the series will appear. While we’ve shared our fave moments, that’s definitely not all of what makes Fun Science so special. Be sure to share with us why you love the series by sending a tweet to @TenEightyUK!
