January has felt 78 days long.
The cold weather really does need to stop being so prominent. There are only so many toes on a human body and frostbite needs to not be a possibility! We’re not saying we’ve slipped on ice a lot during our chilly morning commutes, but our bruises are saying it for us. Bring on the summer heat and all the fun (and relaxation) that comes with it! Who’s with us?!
On with the Round-Up!
I hid a secret song in my videos | doddleoddle
dodie has had a week for the ages! Her Human EP hit the top 5 of the UK album charts and her music video for Monster even found its way onto Sunday Brunch. The mainstream is calling!
In amongst all this craziness, dodie somehow found the time to bring together a video that is a long time in the making. Over the past nine months, she released 20 videos, in which she subtly gave us a new song. Those who’ve streamed the new EP will recognise it instantly as Arms Unfolding. The beautiful opener to the project has been under our noses the whole time; a song that’s been scrapbooked over nine months and is beautifully unique in the form in which it was given to us. We loved it already, this only adds to it!
The Working Class Heroics of JaackMaate | Video Essay | Full Fat Videos
Jack Dean has seen a huge bump in popularity and reach in recent times and with that comes other creators showing their appreciation. This time around, it’s Full Fat Videos giving love. Amongst other points, they talk about how great it is to see someone bucking the expected trajectory of the “vlogger” type, in which their success is what changes them.
As the title suggests, it’s posited that this mentality has a lot to do with his working class roots giving him an outlook that’s stood him in good stead while rising in popularity. This is one of the many reasons he’s a beacon of decency (and swearing) for a lot of viewers, Full Fat Videos included.
I Moved House! | Carrie Hope Fletcher
What began as a quick life update video for Carrie Hope Fletcher quickly turned into something more serious. A frank and engaging vlog about just how much she’s planning to divulge about her life and her new house going forward. This all stemmed from a question on Instagram asking about a potential house tour. Carrie then goes on to explain why she doesn’t feel like that’s a good idea, giving wonderfully thought out and absolutely understandable reasons, almost all of which relate in some way to the scary side of being famous that some experience.
We love the new flowery wallpaper, Carrie. We agree it should be a feature wall!
XO Lie Detector Test | XO
Lie detectors may not be admissable in court proceedings, but they make for some great internet videos! XO are the ones using them this time around. In the hotseat are best friends, Lawrence McKenna and The True Geordie, grilling each other using a mixture of fan questions and their own.
As you’d expect, some of it’s unrepeatable in text form and you’ll have to watch the whole thing to take it all in. Putting it mildly, we get a look at their opinions in a way we’ve definitely not seen before. A fascinating watch, and we’re looking forward to more in the near future.
If You’re Struggling with a New Year Fresh Start | Hannah Witton
So. So. So. So. So you’d be hard pressed to find someone who you’d think would want to see the back of 2018 more than Hannah Witton. That being said, she spent the first few weeks of 2019 living in her mindset from before the holidays, focusing on the impending first draft deadline of her upcoming book, The Hormone Diaries. This means she’s had time to think about resolutions and goals for the upcoming year.
For someone as successful as Hannah, it can be hard to work out where to go next, so this video is here to help everyone who is struggling!
Want more? If you insist….
Samantha Harvey has for us a new cover of one of the standout songs of 2019 thus far, Sam Smith and Normani’s Dancing With A Stranger. This is another one that showcases her voice very well, making it something we definitely want to listen to on its own merit. Is it better than the original? You’ll have to watch to find out.
Zac Alsop and Jamie Rawsthorne, A.K.A. The Zac and Jay Show, are back with another video. This time, they’re showing us just how little it costs to travel. They jump on the three cheapest flights in a row that were available. It can be seen as inspiration for all those who want to see the world, but don’t think doing it is something that’s an option. Also, it just happens to be a funny video that’s great to watch, so it’s a win-win!
Hashtag United are back at it again, bring the audience another match from the side. The opposition this time is Great Wakerling Rovers, a side that are two leagues above them in the football pyramid. With aspirations to go further, this is a great indicator of whether they have the talent to do so. No spoilers for the result here. Watch the video to see how this one of a kind club did!
Sam Carr has something to share with us this week. It’s something we’re jealous of, as we want one of these. It’s his vinyl collection and it’s a beauty. The musical taste is on point and so is the record player that he has. We’ve got to take a second to appreciate the amount of Justin Bieber in the collection, amazing live and on record as well!
