Let’s take a trip down memory lane.
It’s been a while since we’ve reminisced about the good old days, so we thought it was about time we dove into the archives to yet again bring you the best first uploads from some our our favourite creators! Even though YouTube has been around for a relatively short period of time, the changes we see between the following videos and the content these creators are making today is staggering.
If the webcam quality and awkward editing don’t give it away, YouTube has come a long way since the days of 2007 to 2011. Here they are, our Five MORE of the Best: First Uploads!
Charlie Changes | charlieissocoollike
Uploaded back in 2007, Charlie McDonnell‘s first video has all the hallmarks of early YouTube: grainy 4:3 video, Windows Movie Maker editing, royalty free sound effects and sweeping fringes. So much nostalgia!
Since then, Charlie has gone on to become an author, a filmmaker, a musician, the first UK YouTuber to reach one million subscribers and even a tea producer, and this is where it all started for one of the site’s original pioneers. Although he doesn’t upload as much as he used to, his current content still has all the endearing charm of this video, and we can’t wait to see what endeavour he embarks on next!
One boy, One Tube | crabstickz
Onto another of UK YouTube’s old guard now, with Chris Kendall‘s first video, which, uploaded just over a decade ago, really lays the groundwork for what he’s produced over the years.
Taking a cardboard tube and basing dozens of sketches and characters around it, this video shows the bread and butter of what YouTube sketch comedy would become during the site’s early days. With surreal and creative characters and laughs aplenty, this really shows why Chris is one of our favourite, and most under-appreciated, YouTubers.
The Solution to a Bad Day | Hannah Witton
Hannah Witton is known for her videos offering advice to viewers on topics like sex education, living with a disability and relationships, and although nowadays she does this as an author, a podcast host and a public speaker, the following video shows she’s wanted to help since the beginning of her time on YouTube.
In a bad day, full of uncompleted Rubik’s cubes, playing card houses that refuse to stay up and out of tune flutes, Hannah shows us how to turn everything around in a very simple way: with chocolate! It might not be the full solution, but it’s certainly a start.
Modern Warfare 2 Care Package Kill | KSI
One of the more notable faces of YouTube in 2018, KSI certainly had a year to remember. With two high profile boxing matches – one against Joe Weller and the other against US vlogger Logan Paul – and numerous songs and diss tracks under his belt, it can be easy to forget he started out producing purely gaming content.
In this video, KSI gets a creative kill in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, a staple part of YouTube’s gaming community back in the day. Eight years and nearly 20 million subscribers later and we can only wonder what YouTube would be like today if that care package had ended up just a few feet to the left…
Note: If we’re being picky, KSI’s ACTUAL first video is one about the Hubble Telescope he made for a school project and uploaded to his older channel, JideJunior. Hmm, maybe that could be a topic for a future article.
postcards | Orla Gartland
It’s incredible to see how far Orla Gartland has come since her first video. An original song recorded on the Irish island of Inis Meáin, Postcards combines a heartfelt song and picturesque views that show us she was destined for great things, even back then.
In a 2013 interview with campus.ie, Orla explained, “Generally, I think sites like YouTube are great tools as long as it is honest, there is a lot to being said for being very genuine online and people pick up on that instead of having that ‘I’m going to conquer the world attitude’.” It’s something we feel Orla still embodies to this day, and her genuine kind nature and honesty are just some of the many reasons why we’ve grown to love her and her content so much.
So there you have it…
Our Five More of the Best: First Uploads! With YouTube changing each year, it’s always nice to look back through its history and that of our favourite creators. With so many videos to choose from, some didn’t make the final cut, so be sure to let us know what ones you’d like to see next time!
