Another year, another YouTube Rewind.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year – and we’re not talking about Christmas. No, we’re referring to the day all YouTube fans look forward to every year: the release of YouTube Rewind. Those looking for a meme-tastic time with their favourite online creators need look no further than Rewind, which annually leaves us feeling both nostalgic at the year gone by and excited for the future of the platform. This year was… certainly one for the books.
We here at TenEighty HQ have been watching this year’s video on repeat since its release, so, of course, we had to Round-Up some of our favourite moments and share them with you all. Prepare yourself, this year is a bumpy ride.
Is that Will Smith?!
Everyone remembers when The Rock kicked off YouTube Rewind back in 2016, but he’s so yesterday’s news. Everyone’s currently obsessed with Will Smith, so it only seemed right he be given the honour. Over the past year, he’s taken both YouTube and social media by storm, proving time and time again he’s one of the coolest actors of this generation.
(Does anyone know how we can become BFFs with him?)
The campfire
While we don’t necessarily advocate going into the jungle and having a campfire, given the wild animals and bugs that could be lurking about, we would have loved to have been present at this YouTuber extravaganza! Liza Koshy, Lauren Riihimaki, Caspar Lee, Lilly Singh, Gabbie Hanna… There were so many present that we’re running out of breath just listing them all!
Those K-Pop outfits
Has anyone informed Niki and Sammy Albon that K-Pop was referenced in this year’s Rewind? We thank you, Casey Neistat and Veronica and Vanessa Merrell, for suggesting it be included. We’ve been obsessed all year!
Bad Makeup Science
That feeling when one of your all-time favourite online series makes a cameo in YouTube Rewind. We best be careful, though. Safiya Nygaard, Mitchell Moffit and Gregory Brown look to be turning into mad scientists!
So. Much. Food.
We may or may not have ordered copious amounts of take away after watching this Mukbang. Our mouths won’t stop watering! (What can we say, we love delicious food!)
Animators galore!
Animators getting a shoutout in this year’s Rewind? YES, PLEASE! Who else was excited to see cameos from Robert James Rallison, Jaiden Dittfach, Illymation, Tabbes, Dominic Panganiban, EroldStory and Life Noggin?
More of this in next year’s Rewind, please!
How strong the YouTube community is
One of the most heartwarming moments from this year’s Rewind was when those sitting around the campfire started to share what they love most about YouTube and its community. From acts of charity and equal representation, to rallying around fellow creators, such as when Simone Giertz underwent brain surgery, this segment reminded us why we love YouTube and its creators so much.
We’re not going to lie, we got a little quite choked up… Would someone mind grabbing us a tissue?
The comments control Rewind
Leave it to Elle Mills to take things up a notch. She launched our favourite segment of the video, when the YouTube commenters got to control what they saw in this year’s Rewind. ASMR, that INSANE fashion show, Fornite, impressive football skills – we had to take a moment to catch our breath!
The Sister Squad left us sister shook
Who else was sister shook to see James Charles, Grayson and Ethan Dolan, and Emma Chamberlain make an appearance in this year’s Rewind? We hope they managed to land back on earth. We would be sister sad if they didn’t make it back sister safely.
It’s Baby Shark!
We were waiting with baited breath (geddit?!) to see if Baby Shark would make an appearance in this year’s Rewind, and we weren’t disappointed! You can bet we were dancing along to this remix!
So there you have it…
Our favourite moments from YouTube Rewind: Everyone Controls Rewind. We think it’s safe to say it included a lot of 2018’s internet trends, which is quite a feat. What were some of your favourite moments from this year’s Rewind? Be sure to send us a tweet to @TenEightyUK and let us know!
