This week Ariana Grande taught us love, patience and pain…
Thank u, next grabbed the zeitgeist by the throat this past week. It was viewed over 46 million times on YouTube in its first 24 hours, a brand new record. It even has Colleen Ballinger opening the whole thing, what more do you people want?
It is a video that screams 21st century, ‘the age of the internet’ music video making. It is post-modern beyond all belief in a great way. Ariana is in the middle of four different, seminal teen movies pastiches:
13 Going On 30, Bring It On, Legally Blonde and the best of them all, Mean Girls.
If you were to make your version of thank u, next, which four films or YouTube videos would you choose? Answers on a postcard. In the immortal words of Kris Jenner, “Thank u next bitch!”
On to the Round-Up!
Meeting & Interviewing A Flat-Earther | Alfie Deyes
This video really stood out in our sub feed this week. We saw it and did an actual double take. It was very *blink blink blink*
To say there is no merit in the Flat Earth theory is perhaps rational to most people, but there are a portion of the population that do actually believe it. Yes, really. In this video, Alfie Deyes has a discussion with one such person. They talk about all manner of things with a healthy back and forth. It is a fascinating topic to delve into, as conspiracy theories often are. Have a watch and come to your own conclusions!
Writing Update: hitting 40k on my book | Leena Norms
Writing is hard. The blank page burrowing away into your psyche with every flash of your document’s cursor. With an unlimited canvas to create what you hope to be art, it can be hard to start to put words down. That is why is always great to see people talking about writing and their journey with it.
Leena Norms is one of those very people, she works in the world of books and knows all too well about the trials and tribulations of writing. That has not stopped her from putting pen to paper, fingers to keyboard, quill to parchment(?) on her own story. You can really see the passion that she has for this with the way that she tells us the journey to get where she currently is, it’s inspiring for anyone looking to create something, especially people with full-time jobs. Go and get it Leena! We can’t wait to read it, you’ve got a whole bunch of ready made readers here at TenEighty HQ!
Some Lovely Board Games | Sammy Paul
Do you ever cry laugh? Do you like board games from a company with a great name? This is your video!
Big Potato Games have got all manner of weird and wonderful games – we love them. The people enjoying the h*ck out of them in this video are: Sammy Paul, Dodie, Steven Bridges, Reb Day and Thomas ‘Tomska’ Ridgewell. This group of rapscallions play three different games, which we will not tell you about in this article, because the video will tell you in a much better way, with the dulcet tones of Daniel J. Layton.
There are plenty of laughs and japes throughout but you’ll have to trust us when we say this is easily the funniest video we’ve watched this week and we’d watch a sequel in a heartbeat.
Re-introduction to Melanie Murphy | Melanie Murphy
The main issue people have with creators they’ve been subscribed to for ages is that they change. The fact is that everyone changes over time. We are not who we were 10 years ago, or 5 years ago, or even 6 months ago. Growth and change can be a good thing. *unintentional inspirational moment*
Melanie Murphy is aware of that whole thing and so decided, very smartly, to do a re-introduction video to bring people up to speed on the person she is as of right now. This is one of those instances where Melanie shows us why she is one of the genuine people on the platform, incredibly aware of everything she is offering the world and bringing everyone into her thoughts and feelings on a regular basis. This creates much more of a conversation than just content, showing off what YouTube can do that other forms of media just can’t.
Chefs Review Snoop Dogg’s Cook Book! | SORTEDfood
Snoop Dogg released a cookbook, we know, it was news to us too! Who better to review it than the chefs of SORTEDfood?! In this one, they go through two of the recipes in the book. Throughout the video, they showcase the character of both the book and the boys of SORTED. Whatever you may think going into this one, it is a surprise on so many fronts. We may have to invest in the book after this video!
Want more?
Riverdale is a behemoth of a TV show and the best character in the whole thing is Jughead Jones. His look is iconic and it is prime for cosplaying. Jay (eataliens) is here showing us the best way to bringing in the Jughead style into the real world. This is a lookbook for the fans! Next up, we want a Betty lookbook and after that, a Bughead one!
Stonehenge is a World Heritage Site in Wiltshire, England which was created by aliens obviously (maybe). Like the founding of the nation, America’s version happened a long time later. Tom Scott is here to tell us about the mysterious stone circle in Elberton, Georgia that was erected in the mid 1980’s by an anonymous donor. Do you want to know the reasons they may have done it? You’ll have to watch to find out.
Oh and in case you forgot, it’s December! Christmas is coming along quickly and you’ve got to get all the food ready. Chris Collins is here to help with, perhaps, the most important part of the meal. It’s roast potatoes time! These ones are cooked in goose fat and look literally stunning. Send this video to your parents or whoever is doing the dinner this year. You will not regret it!
