DOCTOR WHO SERIES 11 IS FINALLY HERE!
After a (long) year of waiting, we were finally treated to the new series of Doctor Who, and it wasn’t any old premiere. It was our introduction to the Thirteenth Doctor, played by none other than the fabulous Jodie Whittaker, the first woman to ever play the role! The announcement that Jodie would be taking on the role came about in July 2017 and thus created a hype we’ve not seen in the Whovian sphere in a long time, and it all culminated in one of the most anticipated premieres to date!
In case you weren’t aware, many of our favourite YouTubers are HUGE Doctor Who fans, and just like the rest of us they were eagerly awaiting the series 11 premiere. During (and afterward) they excitedly shared their thoughts about the episode, so we thought we’d round-up their feelings. And no, this totally isn’t an excuse for us to write about Doctor Who… *Shifty eyes*
They got together to celebrate
Had some friends over tonight. We watched #DoctorWho. Did you? (And what did you think?) https://t.co/EB0bZhPG8N #EatMySalad #TimShaw #TimeTeam pic.twitter.com/JcmxIxgHKO
— Benjamin Cook (@benjamin_cook) October 7, 2018
Earlier this year, many of our faves were announced as members of Doctor Who Magazine‘s Time Team, and many of them came together to watch the premiere! Those joining Ben Cook included Luke Cutforth, Gerard Groves, Zainab Sheriff, Kezia Rose Newson, blogger Beth Axford and trainee actor Dan James Frank!
We’re kind of hurt they didn’t invite us to join them… We see how it is, Ben.
Let’s watch it more than once
Guess what gang… I'm watching #DoctorWho again already
— Izzy Inkpen (@izzyinkpen) October 7, 2018
Izzy Inkpen wasn’t the only one to re-watch the episode after its premiere. We’ve watched it around four or five times, with more plans to do so in the future! (What? It’s a BRILLIANT episode!)
THREE CHEERS FOR NORTHERN ACCENTS
New #DoctorWho is gonna be solely responsible for reviving my northern accent…
— Daniel J. Layton (@DanielJLayton) October 7, 2018
We are totally here for Doctor Who bringing back everyone’s appreciation for Northern accents! Daniel J. Layton, we look forward to the revival of yours.
So. Many. Tears.
don’t mind me #DoctorWho pic.twitter.com/SHEuRXNbab
— angela (@angelaainnes) October 7, 2018
We’re glad to see we weren’t the only ones to shed a tear after watching the premiere! Angela Innes had the exact same reaction. (And we feel closer to her as a result!)
LOTS of digging
okay i’ve just caught up with doctor who and hoooo boy i am digging it more than i’ve dug it in a long time. i’m talking like big digs here. excavational amounts of digging. if the rest of the series is like that then we are in for a treat.
— Joel Blundell (@joel_blundell) October 8, 2018
Can someone clarify for us if Joel Blundell dug the new episode? This tweet is a bit vague.
We LOVE the new Doctor
can you believe an entire nation fell in love in 63 minutes??? #DoctorWho
— i stan ONE (1) alien woman (@GemmaDunnell) October 7, 2018
Gemma Dunnell isn’t the only one to have fallen in love with the new Doctor! We have yet to meet someone who doesn’t love how Jodie is portraying the character!
Can we talk about the bad guy?
I’m enjoying Doctor Who, and the bad guy is cool!
— Sean Young (@SeanJosephYoung) October 8, 2018
One of our favourite things about the Doctor Who universe is the variety of villains the writers are able to create, and the most recent one is definitely one of our favourites! (It appears he was Sean Joseph Young‘s too.) The human teeth thing did kind of creep us out, though…
The storytelling is different
I'm very excited for where this #DoctorWho is going to go. Can't wait for her to ease into the role, but this story telling made me feel things again, and I haven't felt that since season 4.
— Jazza John (@JazzaJohn) October 7, 2018
Good golly gosh, that captured a HECK of a long-forgotten feeling, didn’t it? Big yes, she’s amazing, more right now plz #DoctorWho
— 𝕷𝖎𝖆𝖒 𝕱𝖗𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙𝖊𝖓 💀 (@LiamDrydenEtc) October 7, 2018
One of the resounding thoughts we’ve seen throughout Twitter is that many, including Jazza John and Liam Dryden, feel a connection to this series more than previous ones. We’ll admit, the storytelling in the last few hasn’t necessarily allowed us to create an emotional connection with the characters, but the new episode left us feeling things we never knew we could and it has us excited to see what the rest of the series has in store!
Subtitles were needed, we guess?
my american girlfriend had to put on subtitles for doctor who lmao
— fiona 💞 (@neonfiona) October 8, 2018
NeonFiona‘s girlfriend wasn’t the only one in need of subtitles while watching the premiere. We saw numerous tweets from people around the world who were struggling to understand Jodie’s Yorkshire accent. We’re not going to lie, it did make us laugh.
It inspired some lovely fan art
What an opener! What does everyone think of our new Doctor? Isn’t she brilliant?
And what a cliffhanger… how will the Doctor and her friends get out of that one? Lost in space… ✨ #doctorwho pic.twitter.com/LyMiFLueFF
— Gerard Groves (@GerardGroves) October 7, 2018
We’ve always been in awe of Gerard’s artistic skills and this portrait of Jodie’s Doctor is yet another example as to why.
How are you so talented, Gerard? TELL US YOUR SECRETS.
Final thoughts…
Don't really watch #DoctorWho but this new one is a bit bloody lovely isn't it? Amazing cast, quite emotional and Jodie was SO DAMN GOOD. Love all the Yorkshire accents too 👌 Feels fresh, diverse and just damn great. I wanna see more 🔥
— Elliot Gough (@ElliotExplicit) October 7, 2018
Ohhh I am very much in. That felt like a long forgotten feeling I haven't felt in a while. Highlight of the episode: time traveller on a hill watching a human trying to learn how to ride a bike #DoctorWho
— Myles (@itsamemyleo) October 7, 2018
Yes, yes, yes @bbcdoctorwho. Jodie Whittaker is absolutely bloody brilliant. What an awesome first episode. Can’t wait for the rest of the series!
— Tom Fletcher (@TomFletcher) October 8, 2018
Overall, we’d say the general consensus for the new series is pretty positive! Many of those who watched, including Elliot Gough, Myles Wheeler and Tom Fletcher, were absolutely blown away by the new Doctor – and for good reason! Jodie breathes a breath of fresh air into the character and we can’t wait to see where she takes the role!
