What’s the best part about going away to university?
Some of you might say it’s getting to experience a brand new city, which, we’ll admit, is actually pretty cool. Other’s might cite their ability to now eat as much junk food as possible. Sure, this seems like a good thing at first, but maybe not so much when you wake up the next morning with a killer stomach ache that leaves you in bed all day feeling miserable. Personally, our favourite thing about moving away would definitely be having our own space to decorate however we want. Small room, big room, a shared space – with a trip to the shops, there’s nothing that can’t be done to make this new space feel like home.
If you’re like us, then you’ve probably spent hours scouring the depths of YouTube for university room tours, trying to gleam some inspiration on how to decorate your own room. Our creativity sparks up a storm watching them, which is why we simply had to collect our top five and share them with you.
With a guarantee they’ll give you some major decor inspo, it’s our Five of the Best: University Room Tours!
UNIVERSITY ROOM TOUR – First Year Halls! | Beauty Spectrum
Kicking off this special university edition of Five of the Best is the lovely Molly Thompson! Molly is currently doing an art foundation degree at Leeds Art University, and she was kind enough so share with us how she’s decorated her room. Prepare for some major heart-eyes.
The first thing we noticed was that Molly was lucky enough to have her own ensuite bathroom – oh, how we would have loved one of them. Sure, it’s a bit small, but it definitely beats having to share one with everyone else on the floor! From there, she shows us everything from her wardrobe and drawers to her sleeping area and desk, the latter two being our favourite parts of the room. The fairy lights around her bed make the area look like a dream, and the memo board she’s hung over the desk? One of the best ways to combat homesickness, in our opinion! As well, we have to give a nod to the always adorable Christopher the Cactus, and we love the fact she brought all her Harry Potter books with her. Once a Potterhead, always a Potterhead.
An important note to take from this video? Place a sticky note on your door to remind you to take your key when leaving the room. The amount of times we forgot ours whilst at uni is embarrassing!
Cambridge University Room Tour | BEST ROOM EVER | Joe Binder
Joe Binder is here with the most brutally honest university room tour we’ve ever watched. If you’re going into this thinking you’re going to see the cleanest room ever, we suggest you change your expectations.
To be honest, even though Joe’s room is messy, we’re glad he didn’t try to clean it up for the camera. We love someone who owns up to their messiness! There’s no university student out there who is able to keep their room perfectly clean all the time. With homework, exams and all the partying that goes on, there’s not always time to clean up. However, we do think the pile of pop cans of the shelf and that random piece of string could be thrown out… Where’s the bin?
We found ourselves continually bursting into laughter while watching Joe’s tour, which we think is a sign of a pretty good video.
UNI ROOM TOUR 2018 | STUDENT DECOR IDEAS | Antoinette Victoria
Antoinette Victoria recently moved house for her third year of university and was kind enough to show us how she turned her new room from drab to fab!
Right away, we were amazed at how much Antoinette was able to fit into such a small room, without it feeling cluttered or too full. From the multiple blankets on her bed to the rugs on the floor, we were getting some major cozy vibes that had us wishing our rooms were more like hers! Similarly to Molly, she hung some fairy lights around the bed, making the place feel a lot more at home and left us itching to head to the shops to buy some of our own! Paired with the room’s grey theme, they were the perfect accent pieces to really make it feel like home.
Also, we have to agree with Antoinette. Make use of pitch rails if you’re lucky enough to have one or two in your room. Hanging things on the wall, whether they be pictures or a mirror, is key to making a new space feel like home!
UNIVERSITY ROOM TOUR | The University of Lincoln | Luke Birch
We don’t think we’ve watched a more energetic room tour than this one from Luke Birch. Seriously, he’s making us wish we could go back to university, just so we can live the dorm life all over again!
Luke’s room is split into three sections – the desk area, the bed and the toilet – all of which he shows in great detail. From there, we’re shown everything from how he’s decorated his pin boards with a mixture of personal photos and academic reminders to the ample amount of storage space he has and his… lovely view? While it isn’t necessarily the worst view in the world, we did end up feeling a bit sorry for him when he said many of his friends’ rooms were overlooking the marina. But, hey, at least we know he’ll never be late to class!
Our favourite thing about Luke’s room? The full-sized poster of Zac Efron hanging on the back of his door. Sure, there might be fire escape instructions behind it, but Zac is far more important.
University Room Tour | HollieDollie
Closing out this week’s Five of the Best is a university room tour from a creator whose username is definitely one of our favourites: HollieDollie, also known as Hollie McRae.
Hollie’s dorm room is definitely one of the prettiest we’ve seen, as the paint on the walls isn’t drab like in most university halls. The beige and grey give it a more modern feel, which we are totally here for. While her space might be small, she makes good use of the storage she has, and we love how she’s brought in a plant to both add some colour and life to the room. Also, can we take a moment to appreciate how organised her desk is? It. Is. Such. Goals!
We love how she’s added fairy lights to the shelving unit above her bed. Some might have left is plain, but Hollie’s mixed it up and we feel the added light allows the room to feel larger than it actually is.
So there you have it…
Our Five of the Best: University Room Tours! We feel they’re prime examples on how to turn dorm rooms that aren’t too special into places students can call home, and we hope they helped give you all some major inspo when it comes to decorating your own rooms!
