Yasmine Summan’s parody is a celebration of all things emo.
Morning Routine and Get Ready With Me videos have become a rite of passage for any personality based YouTuber. Ever since US-based beauty creator, Michelle Phan popularised the genre with a viral video in 2013, we’ve seen others adapt it in their own unique ways. Zoe Sugg, for instance, has a makeup and skincare routine for seemingly every occasion, and Daniel Howell made a mark on the genre with his signature sarcastic humour in the now infamous Get ready with Dan video.
Yasmine Summan, a self-proclaimed, “Emo Queen”, has rejuvenated the genre with a parody of her own The resulting video from this uniquely self-aware concept is a celebration of emo subculture and all the idiosyncrasies that come along with it. The combination of the stereotypical self-loathing emo caricature and the usually positive pretext of a Morning Routine results in a brilliant video to wake up to.
Setting up the false pretence of a cheerful video, the opening title greets the viewer with the infamous iMovie pixie dust title. This ukulele and unicorns charade, however, falls apart the moment Yasmine wakes up and a dark death-obsessed emo social outcast caricature replaces former notions.
“I start off my morning in bed asleep, which is my favourite activity because it means I’m one step closer to being actually dead,” Yasmine informs the audience in a cheery tone as she wakes up from a deep slumber. The expert way in which Yasmine sets up the genre’s rules and then unexpectedly breaks them with contrasting emo paradigms makes this parody a must-watch.
You’d usually expect candles to be used in these videos to calm the senses, or for a bit of self-care, perhaps. Yasmine, however, informs us that she sees the burning of the candle as a metaphor for her life “eventually burning out.” Coming to another staple of the Get Ready With Me video, she decides to slap copious amount of black haphazardly on her face, reinforcing emo stereotypes. A girl after our own hearts.
The humour created through the contrasts is important for creating this emo caricature, however, it is the small details that make Yasmine’s video stand out. From the Pierce the Veil flag on the ceiling and her Neck Deep tour shirt, to Mark Hoppus staring at you from the wall and not-so-PG words written on the mirror where you’d expect inspirational quotes, we had to watch it a few times to get the full effect.
Yasmine’s Emo Morning Routine is a great example of breaking genre conventions to create a comedic parody of a well-established YouTube genre. We couldn’t get enough of all the emo goodness in the video and look forward to seeing what our favourite Emo Queen will do next!
