Travel is expensive but Viola Helen shows us that it’s still doable as a student.
If there was anyone who was going to give us the travel bug this summer it was going to be Viola Helen. After all, as she says “since October 2016 I have taken 12 trips abroad to 11 different countries and 26 cities.”
In her latest video, HOW TO TRAVEL AS A STUDENT, Viola shares her tips and tricks to help students travel on a budget. Loyal viewers will know she caught the travel bug visiting places such as China and LA, leading her to start off by stating that she funds all of her travel herself.
The first tips she shares are to do with saving money. She honestly shares how she splits her money from the various jobs she has had over the years and how she cuts backs on certain things. She openly states that she very rarely buys clothes and instead opts to purchase slightly more expensive items so they stand the test of time, enabling her to focus on saving the rest of her wages for her travels. Listening to this as people who love fashion and are partial to a Primark Haul or two, we admire Viola’s dedication to travel in this way.
Resources are also a key part of her tips and tricks. She shares the sites she visits to look for discounted flights and our personal favourite: the travel programmes available to students. These are programmes where you are funded to travel to a city in order to take part in certain activities such as teaching or guiding tours while exploring a place you may not have visited otherwise.
A good point she adds is to maximise the time you are in the country by extending your stay once the programme has finished. “You get to travel and see more of the country but it also means you can travel around that country after the programme.”
A moment which made us chuckle was when she talks about accommodation, as she asks “who has the money to stay in a hotel?” You can see the passion she has for this topic as she goes on to explain with determination that “if you want to max out your dollar, for the best use possible, you want to be staying in hostels or AirBnB’s.”
At the end of the video, she asks if we want to see specific videos on flights, budgeting tips and finding accommodation. And all we can say to that is yes, yes and yes! It is clear Viola is a travel aficionado and we want all the tips we can get from her.
