In honour of Pride month, Melanie Murphy opens up about bisexuality, sharing some lesser known facts.
During the video, Melanie shows her passion for raising awareness about the misconceptions surrounding bisexuality. She shares that she’s created her own line of merch with the Bifinity logo, which will help fund some short films, one of which will be about bisexuality. We loved Femme, a previous video that Melanie made about her bisexuality, so we cannot wait!
We thought we knew a lot about bisexuality but we were surprised at some of the facts that Melanie mentions. She explains that most bisexuals are still in the closet, and some see bisexuality as a “stepping stone” to coming out as gay, invalidating it as its own sexuality.
Something else we found interesting was the amount of lesser known research which is out there surrounding bisexuality. Throughout the video, Melanie backs up her facts with scientific research and references sources like Freud as early examples of academics trying to understand bisexuality.
We instantly found ourselves wanting to look more into the research and it made us question why it’s not more well known. It is something Melanie herself is all for, as she says, “I want so much more research on this”, even offering to take part in it herself.
She also touches on the greater societal acceptance of women being bisexual. She poses the question “do you know more bisexual women than bisexual men?” to her audience, admitting that “in my entire life I only met three guys who identified as bisexual.” Thinking about it we have to admit, it is more common for women to come out as bisexual which is as shame as everyone should be able to live their truth.
We will leave you to watch the video to get all the facts but, as with everything to do with sexuality, Melanie sums it up perfectly when she says that “its all very fascinating, confusing, glorious, and complex- just as us humans are.”
To everyone who is celebrating Pride month this June we just want to say enjoy, stay safe, and be proud of who you are!
